It’s not that hard!!

I might quickly point out that I am talking about Pizza and not some other issue!

Seriously though I had the worst pizza last night from a local home delivery service pizza shop. It makes me wonder how do people get it so wrong? I was in a little country town last week riding my new motorcycle home and I had one of the best pizza’s in a long time. So why in a town like Melbourne do so many get it wrong.

People try to save money by using very bad cheap ingredients and then pile them high so the pizza looks good and is big and heavy but it is also crap! The best pizza’s only have a few quality ingredients on them and are wonderous to behold and eat.

Have you ever asked yourself how can a pizza joint be offering two large pizza’s and a bottle of sugar and fizz all for the low price (and even lower quality of ingredients) of $12!!!!!!

And while I am at it do some research on the stuff that is supposedly shredded ham it is not what you think it is!!!! But is is cheap.

I should just stop ordering pizza – my pizza oven is in the garage waiting on the knocking out of a wall so I can get it around the back of the house and set it up! No more pizza till I am making my own again!

Damn it it’s here!

Yep well we’ve gone and done it haven’t we…I say ‘we’ because ‘we’ all welcomed in the new year in some form or another. Now I am already three quarters through the first day of next year. (Question when does it stop being next year and become this year?) Just to be up front I am not all that impressed that next year is here and I am already living it. I was quite happy to wait a little longer for it to arrive – yes I begrudgingly welcomed it in (ask my wife I was a little grumpy about the whole thing) it’s not like I really had a choice right? And quite frankly I am not ready for it!! It’s not that there are things I’ve left undone in 2012 (although I still haven’t unpacked the garage) it’s just that I am not ready for it, I don’t feel optimistic about it, I haven’t got myself into that positive space where I can welcome in the new knowing full well that there is nothing new about welcoming the New Year. Next year is full of the same old same old of last year and that was hard enough to deal with so how am I supposed to get over that while being faced with a whole new year of it ahead of me?????

Yes embrace change, embrace the unknown, create your future, one door closes and another one opens, something will come up it always does (especially if you wait %*#*ing long enough) see the possible in every moment etcetera etcetera. Well yes the door of 2012 certainly closed and the door of 2013 certainly opened (so I guess that bit is true) only I can see no discernible difference in the two and now I am not sure if I am going forward or backward but feel as if I am doing both i.e. I am going backwards into the future.

Oh well I guess I just have to suck it up – I have stepped off the precipice of 2012 and am now free falling into 2013 – I would be lying if I told you I am not worried about the landing, I am. I don’t want more of the same – I want new, exciting, more fulfilling, more prosperity – I WANT IT TO BE A BETTER YEAR THAN THE ONE JUST GONE.

There were significant and wonderful changes in my family’s life last year starting around June and which are still in play. Maybe that has rocked my boat more than I realise – although I do realise the import of the changes and the deep affect they have had on all of us – things are no longer the same and thus, perhaps the crux of the matter, I do not want 2013 to be the same like 2012 was and indeed 2011.

Time for more change then?! Bring it on….I may not be ready (just yet) 2013 but I am willing and I am able!

I may go finish unpacking the garage – better sort the past out so I can step into the future without baggage!

Politics

Monday, November 12th, 2012

You know I really cant be fucked with politics! And I am not just talking politics where they spend TWO BILLION dollars on a campaign and the status quo remains the same as it was before they spent TWO BILLION dollars. I certainly cant be fucked with Australian politics with it’s negativity, vitriol, egos and LIES.

I especially cant be fucked with office politics, interpersonal politics, the politics of ego, religious politics, racial politics and especially the politics of dishonesty.

I really cant be bothered with it.

First post back after a while and I am swearing – my appologies.

I have missed you all.

Just wanted to get that off my chest, I am feeling better now.

Talk soon.

That was a tough month

Friday, August 31st, 2012

August was a tough month! I kept fairly busy with my walks with my gorgeous wife and rides. I kept fairly busy with continuing to develop my sauce range – albeit rather slowly and I kept busy working towards getting sponsorship for series five of Mercurio’s Menu. I got dropped from hosting a charity gig – booked in May and then for no explanation dropped a week before the gig! Being charity I wasnt charging anything to do it. I passed up a gig in New Zeland because of the charity gig. Finished the month with a half hour radio spot on 3aw talking beer and food and promoting my cook book. I had some pretty good meeting with some positive ….um….feelings? There are no outcomes from them as yet but there are doors left open with possibilities and opportunities to be looked at, mined, developed and progressed so that is good.

I didnt earn a single cent which is what makes it hard! Some one asked me after me telling them about my month – how do you get out of bed in the morning – sometimes it is an effort emotionally but truth be told life is grand – if you didnt need to earn a living to pay the mortgage, feed the kids, put petrol in the car etc then life is a dream and I am a lucky man. I have a wonderful family, lots of love in my house and in my life.

So come on September show me what you got, lets get it on, lets get some great work, lets step it up a couple of notches! I’m ready are you?

Crazy business….

I am very please to note that channel seven are replaying series four episodes of Mercurio’s Menu. These eps went to air late last year so it is great to see them back on the free to air TV. Obviously channel seven like the show and enjoy the ratings that they bring otherwise they wouldnt screen them at all let alone be rescreening them – so I am happy and excited and it is good that my face is out their on the box.

How ever……

channel seven no longer want to be involved with any further series.

Kind of doesnt make sense?

We are still looking for a major sponsor for our next series (5) and I am pleased to say we have a commercial free to air network that will take the new series! So come on sponsor and lets make some good TV.

I am wondering….

who I will become tomorrow?

Great News!!!

My cook book Cooking with Beer has been recognised as the fourth best beer book in the world!!!!! It came fourth in the Gourmand Cookbook awards in the beer section. To be able to say it is in the top four in the world, it is the fourth best beer book in the worlds is great. Yes I would like to have said it won and I dont go out of my way to say it only came fourth but what ever way you want to look at it fourth best in the WORLD is good for me!

So what were the top three….third was one was called – biers et brasseries des 2 Luxembourg – so is a book about the beer and beer cafes of Luxembourg,  2nd was the  UK Good Beer Guide basically a guide togood  beer and pubs in England and the winner was the OxfordCompanion to beer – which I thought would most likely win as it is a very in deepth history of beer type book with many contributors.

See my page here – http://www.cookbookfair.com/index.php/gourmand-awards/winners/gourmand-awards-2012-winners/book/3?page=1

And I would suggest looking through the whole booklet to see the worlds best cookbooks for 2012 – http://www.cookbookfair.com/index.php/gourmand-awards/winners/gourmand-awards-2012-winners/book/3?page=1

Not bad for a boy who started out as a dancer with a bit of a passion for food and yes beer! Who ever would have seen that coming?

Cheers

Is it safety, stupidity or revenue raising

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Okay first and foremost it is against the law to speed so the very first and last argument that can be had (and the one that those who don’t wish to have the discussion or actually look at the argument) is just that – it is against the law and therefore if you do and you are caught you deserve the consequences.

I can’t argue against it. I can argue the STUPIDITY of how, when, where and why the roads speeds are placed and how when where and why they are policed. Or in fact not actually ‘policed’ – ie by the police – but how people are caught and fined by a privately run company that is largely owned by one of our large banks (I believe but could be mistaken) – REVENUE.

Yes this is about the speeding fine I received in the mail today. It was for doing 66kph in a 60 zone. In fact they take 3 kph off just in case their equipment is faulty so they say my actual speed was 69kph. Of course one must ask if there equipment could be out by 3kph couldn’t it read lower and higher ie plus or minus 3kph thereby my reading might actually be 66kph which they could then take 3 kph off to give me a reading of 63kph?? However that is not the point.

The reason they don’t like us speeding – they being the police is because they say it is dangerous. So me doing 6 kph over the speed limit driving up a very long straight and very wide road with clear, open vision for at least 6-700 meters ahead is apparently dangerous?? In the three years I have been driving along this road there has never been an accident in this road and in fact it is the sort of road that you will often see sign posted at 70 or 80 kmh. In fact it joins on to a road that is sign posted at 80 and then becomes a 90 for 1 kilometre before returning to 80. The fact is though that speeding along this road is not dangerous at least not if you are speeding by 6 – 10 kph over the limit as most traffic does daily on this road.

The reason a speed camera is put on this very straight, very safe, no incident road is that because it is so wide and has such great open forward vision people tend to drive along it safely but over the limit and the private company operating the speed cameras know it can make good money on this road – REVENUE!

I am teaching my daughter to drive and I am always telling her to be careful of her speed and she will complain about how often she is looking at her speedo instead of the road – a very common complaint from many many drivers – the fact that the speed police have us watching our speedos and taking our eyes off the road creates a very dangerous environment for road users and you could fairly say is an environment created by the speed police – STUPIDITY!

The police often say there is no such thing as safe speeding but in fact there are many people who would agree there is. There are plenty of stupid, irresponsible and criminal drivers out on the road and there are plenty of weird and inappropriate speed signs posted in strange and ill advised areas. Worse there are plenty of plain clothed camera cars sitting on very straight and safe pieces of road making good money out of people doing less than 10 kph over the limit – yes they are speeding according to the law but you cannot say they are being in any way, shape or form dangerous.

Sadly these camera cars and the revenue (and profit they make) have nothing to do with caring about our safety for if they did they would be patrolling known danger spots where their efforts could actually make a difference – would in fact save lives.

As for me I let my guard down, usually I spot these camera cars well in advance and check my speed and if I am over the limit then I adjust to the relevant posted sign and then when well away from the camera car do the smart and safe thing when driving on the road with lots of other cars – drive according to the conditions around me. Sometimes this means exceeding the posted limit and sometimes it means going slower than the limit – amazingly I was given my license because I was seen as a responsible, mature person able to think for myself and to operate a motor vehicle with prudence, intelligence and safety.

Apparently.

Vale Michael Dragan

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

My heart and thoughts go out to all my cousins in Wisconsin who will bury their youngest brother today. He was killed on the 29th of December when his car was hit by a train as he was crossing the tracks. Michael leaves behind a loving wife and three wonderful children. I cant imaging the shock of being given this news it is to me unfathomable and because of this I cannot imagine the pain that his brothers and sisters must be feeling – so unexpeceted, so violently sudden that there are no goodbyes, no last words, just an ugly dark hole ripped open and shoved unwanting and within all that loved him nestled coldly against our hearts.

I only met Michael and his wife Pam when I was in Wisconsin filming a year and a half ago. He was the youngest of 9 – the eldest brother Roger died of cancer some years ago so the family know loss but the sheer tragic nature of this will hurt for a long time.

I send my love and thoughts to you all I know it hurts so please be gentle with yourselves.

RIP Michael

Ciao 2011 Hello 2012

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Thought I best post something early before I open the champagne and get things going.

Wishing everyone who drops by here a very happy, prosperous, healthy, harmonious, joyful and positive year ahead.

I have decided this year end beginning that I will for the first time ever make a new year resolution, however as I will not commence that resolution until after my Mum goes home (yes she has been here visiting since before Xmas) and it does include drinking less I will not be drinking less while Mum is here as a nice glass of wine or two with Mum is a pleasure not to be messed with.

So my New Year resolution will be posted on the 6th of Jan.

I hope all your wishes come true in 2012!
