Does Paul Mecurio think of himself as a dancer who acts or an actor who dances?
``Definitely an actor,'' is Paul's reply. ``Strictly Ballroom was great for my career but it did tend to brand me in Australia as a dancer only. ``In America, it is much different. Over there, they saw the film and asked, `Where did you learn to dance like that?' ``But in Australia it was so huge, the dancing became huge too.'' Another misconception Paul has to deal with is that he still lives in the United States. ``I'll be at home in Sydney and someone will see me and be, like, `Wow, Paul, you're back. How long are you here for?' ``But the reality is I'm living and working in Australia and I'm very pleased to do so.'' Paul travelled to the United States after the success of Strictly Ballroom and was in three feature films there, including Exit To Eden, before returning home to Australia and a huge array of work. One of Paul's jobs is his recurring guest role on Medivac as the plucky young plumber, Roy Fields, married to Macy (Rena Owen). Because of his busy acting and choreography schedule, the producers of Medivac juggle his appearances around other commitments. ``I feel very fortunate with Medivac - they've been great to me. Medivac, for me, was a great opportunity to be on televison in Australia and to get to work with some truly good actors. ``I think some of them think I'm pretty lucky too - I get to just pop in and out without the daily grind.'' Paul is in demand as a choreographer in Australia and overseas, but does he still dance himself? ``Sometimes in my kitchen,'' he laughs. |
