While I was out
You said: Note: comments on old entries are closed. Please comment only on the current entry. Comments Is this cryptic or am I just plain dopey? Peter, nothing cryptic and you're certainly not dopey, plain or fancy; "While I was out, you said..." Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 21, 2003 06:57 AMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77While you were out I said: "I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod." I seem to be saying that alot lately. {{{shrug}}} Hope everyone is good. Posted by: Innussiq on August 21, 2003 09:51 AMfrom IP: 12.172.242.245Innussiq, (Duncan); thanks for that. I am now totally free of confusion. All is obvious. I am good, thanks for asking. Posted by: Peter on August 21, 2003 10:57 AMfrom IP: 203.41.31.98Maybe god is a verb. Posted by: Dhiana on August 22, 2003 01:11 AMfrom IP: 64.132.54.59Paul, while you were out, I said: “Have fun, safe traveling, happy dancing and cuddling with your girls, enjoy being at home, every single moment that you have. I’m pretty sure you will, except for the moment when you have to board that flight back to Canada.” Still amazed by you all and thank you for your positive affirmation. I most graciously accept the recognition of longest post of the year :) although, mind you, the year isn’t over yet … not that I’m planning to post anything longer myself, but someone else might. Peter, you made me laugh. It’s usually you yourself who brings up the “nutbag” issue with reference to yourself along the lines of “you guys probably think I’m a nutbag …” Thanks also for your input on synergy and pushing ahead with confidence. While in many areas, I have a lot of confidence and pursue what I want, this past experience and the past days have shown me that this fear and fear of asking for what I want and need is much more deeply ingrained in me and goes way back. I’m still not sure what triggered it, but something happened when I was very little, I just don’t know what it is yet, and perhaps it wasn’t anything that can be pinpointed. But I know that when this part of me is less afraid it will reveal that to me. Still learning a lot from this experience, but also am feeling empowered by it. Diane, I’m so glad you made a decision for yourself for tutoring. I think you will be great at it and I hope it will bring you great joy. What subjects are you going to do the tutoring in? I’m also very happy that your husband and son had these acting opportunities. I’m going to look for the commercial now and the show later. That must be a relief for you as well to see them happy and doing what they love. Oh, and headache easing vibes for you. I’m really impressed by how much time and energy you invest in your community. It’s inspiring! Grandma I’m so thankful that your family is safe yet again. Wasn’t there something equally close not too long ago in another suicide bombing? Man, I don’t get this violence and hatred … Safe thoughts and calm to you and your family. Linda, to go with your analogy of me first getting a foot and now a leg in the door, this makes me wonder what will happen when I get all of myself through the door. I’m still working on my life plan and dreams sorting out the direction I want to go in. Dhiana, glad to see you back here. Missed you too, thought of sending you an email to “check up on you.” How did the teacher exam go that you took a while back. Heard anything yet? What (or how) do you mean "god is a verb"? Interesting thought! Dennis, loved your poem too. Have you started with your dance classes yet? Whit, I hope your wrist heals quickly, but most importantly, that you too will find what you want and can pursue your dreams and see them become reality. Welcome to What’s and Laura & a wonderful day for everyone! Hi Innussiq, how are you doing? Evelyn, Yes, that was Dhiana's chicken-heads exam. I had forgotten about that. I'm curious how that came out too. No, I don't start classes until mid September. Have investigated the required "uniform" however. Egad! What has Paul gotten me into? The "dance belt": a medieval instrument of torture bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase "lift and separate". What does it mean to God something, Dhiana. An interesting idea. I will have to thunk on it. Dennis hey everyone. just stopping by to say hi. it's been awhile hope all are well. the blackout here in nyc was inconvenient, but fun. beautiful evening to walk over the bridge. stuck with about $6 in wallet and only my feet as transportation, i hoofed it to my local pub where the beer was freely flowing -- wouldn't want it to get warm. i finally saw stars in a new york night sky. glad to hear things are going well for paul in canada. i'm sure family hugs are in his future soon. you all are as interesting a read as ever. definitely one of the closest-knit, most in-depth board families on the net. take care. Then I said: "Ah, doesn't matter", and then got right back to what I had to do (more work). And I didn't say any more. It was very quiet in my little office. Posted by: Peter on August 22, 2003 05:28 AMfrom IP: 203.41.31.137Loved your post Peter! Whenever I'm feeling down on the world I sit back and thing of all the good/positive things I have in my life...friends, great job, roof over my head, etc. and realize how minor some things really are. As for quiet in my office...never...I can often be heard singing along with whatever CD I have blaring whilst I toil away...a sort of meditation I think! Kat Dhiana said: I PASSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (good thing I have such a hairy arse ;-) not really. Honest!) Both freaking parts of that nasty sucker. Oh! what a relief! I kept telling myself it didn't really matter, that I could take the one part that I pretty much KNEW I'd failed over again, etc. But I don't have to~and they EMAIL you the results now. How awesome is that? I just found out. YAY! And oh, look, it's Friday afternoon, 5:15pm...and the pub's JUST down the street...see ya! Toast me tonight. I deserve it. ;-) Smug Me. PS will continue the "God/verb" discussion Monday. Also, while I am out, think of OTHER things which could be referred to as a "nutbag". And if you are having difficulty, see the "Dance Belt" discussion above. ;-) Going to get my fill of Guinness. aHA! Posted by: Dhiana on August 23, 2003 05:20 AMfrom IP: 64.132.54.59Dhiana, what with toasting Paul (see previous thread) and you, tonight, I'm doing an awful lot of drinking with youse guys. Tonight it's a very good vintage of seltzer. But I know if I get wasted (or bloated) this group will see that I get home safely. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Katalina, I have to say that even though I loath rap, that was brilliant. There are times when I feel the need to exit quietly from this blog. There is so much talent displayed here I sometimes feel like an outsider. Okay, Katilina, I have been avoiding the issue. The Dance Belt. Fortunately, I am among family. First let me dance around the subject (ha) and recommend a series of articles by Keith Knox at http://members.aol.com/pumukau/ These and Paul's "doco" were mainly responsible for giving me courage to try this dance...thingy. By the way if you haven't seen Paul's ACE documentary, try and get a copy. It's a real joy to watch and, ladies, you will see A LOT of Paul at age 20. By the way, before you ask, pumukau means dancer in Algonquin. Why Algonquin? Geeze, I don't know, ask Keith. The dreaded Dance Belt is a form of jockstrap (with which, I am sure, you gentlemen are well familiar). Undoubtedly invented by the French: a cruel people. The trouble is, no one has thought to include operating instructions, in French or otherwise. The natural inclination (no pun intended) of the average male is to allow his (oh, God, how to say this: muse don't desert me now) ...accoutrements to rest in a comfortable southerly direction as in any other athletic support garment. This would make sense, yes? But NO. One is required to strap oneself down in a vertical configuration in some sort of atavistic Druid-like rite. Is it any wonder there is so much tippy-toeing going on. Where is the humanity, I ask you. Oh, the agony. My face is red. Dennis Dennis, better you than me! Dhiana, congrats on your passing. Posted by: Peter on August 23, 2003 08:55 AMfrom IP: 203.41.31.56Dhiana, congrats!!! God as a verb. I'll be thinking of that instead. Kat you are a great rapper. Dennis, good golly miss molly, take that thing off. Paul at age 30? Where do I get this tape? I'm just teasing. Actually you lucky fellows look better as you age. Look at Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford. Paul's no doubt hotter at this very moment, right Andrea? Love to Mil and All, Peter, hey, how about a little support (sorry). Whitney, some more than others. Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 23, 2003 09:32 AMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77Yeah, I agree Dennis. Some guys age better than others. Now I have to know more about this belt, but I'm afraid to ask. I guess I may have to get the video. And that was Paul at 20 not 30 as I mistakenly posted, right? With that "slowly diminishing backside" no doubt, he'll enhance his visual charisma. James Brown believes if a man has his hair and his teeth he has it all. Posted by: Whitney on August 23, 2003 10:10 AMfrom IP: 129.71.185.226Hello fellow PC-er's. Just thought I would pass this on as we were all wondering when CBS would air Code 11-14. Well this is our lucky weekend, Sunday night 8-10 CDT. I'm recording it. But will try to watch it too. Dennis: So glad you get to wear that piece of torture equipment. I was so glad when the invented control top pantyhose, I hated having to wear a girdle(probably still should). Now I've even given up the pantyhose. Well must go get more laundry rotated(washer-dryer-folding table). Will think of all of you sunday evening sitting around the tv to see Paul. Hugs to all Good Morning, Whit and all! My, my, I thought that at my age I knew it all, but Dennis, the Dance Belt is a new concept to me, but it stands to reason the French would invent it! (If you think I am blushing while writing this, forget it!) Dhiana, congratulations! I lift a glass of plain club soda (no sodium) in your honor!!! I just bought the DVD of "Chicago"...marvelous! If you lovely people buy it, DO NOT buy the "wide screen" version...go for the "full screen". If you buy the wide screen, you will get those black margins, called "letterbox" on top and bottom, gyping you out of the full effect of the scenes. If your store does not have the full screen version, you can get it from amazon.com. I am planning to use the music in my next "Follies 2005." Have a wonderful weekend. Peace and Love, Grandma Posted by: Grandma Mil on August 23, 2003 05:34 PMfrom IP: 168.191.192.233Whitney, visual charisma, I like that. It has a rhythm. But please, ask away, I have nothing to hide (let me rephrase that). As to Paul's backside; of course, we guys take no notice of such things. Let me simply say that at 20 Paul was most definitely Paul. I, for one, am looking forward to some glute enhancement, myself, from the classes. Have you ever seen "Exit to Eden", by the way? There is a whole, long, very embarrassing scene to that end (pun intended). Sherrlyn, have a little compassion for us 'merkins. George Bush and no Aussie TV. Mildred, you blush? Never. You are a woman of the world and after my own heart. Happy weekend to all and to all a good night, Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 23, 2003 08:07 PMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77Grandma Mil I am such a hound-dog on the issue of dvd formatting. The full screen format gives you only 1/3 of the picture that the letterbox gives you. What they do is litterally chop off the ends of the image and extend the center part so it fills the standard tv screen. The letterbox version is the way the movie was intended to be seen. If your tv screen is like a 25" or less it may look very small but you are actually getting ripped off when you buy the full screen version. I said: What clever, creative and imaginative people come to this Corner! Thinking of you all, Inn, thanks for the lowdown on the letterbox format versus the whole screen format. Personally, I still prefer the full screen, even if things on the right and left are missing...the full screen is so conducive to beautiful closeups, etc., I can't imagine our "Strictly Ballroom" in anything but full screen. I guess it's just a matter of preference, and that's why both formats are offered to the public. On two of my favorite movies, "Interrupted Melody" and "East of Eden" the movies started with the opening credits done in letterbox, and my heart sank..then, when the first scenes came on, the screen reverted to full screen..there was almost a collective sigh of relief from the audience when I showed the films in my film seminar! Dennis, wish I could reach out and kiss you, (along with everyone else here on PC)...remember the ad, "reach out and touch someone"? I guess all of you marvelous youngsters have been doing that right along.(A "youngster" is anyone under the age of 60..the rest are seniors...hope I haven't insulted anyone!) Peace and love, Grandma Posted by: Grandma Mil on August 24, 2003 12:21 AMfrom IP: 168.191.192.233Goodmorning Mamma Mil and All. Is it good night Paul? Inn's right I believe. With a small tv things can get mighty tiny. Dennis, you're so right. We 'merkins are to be pitied. We didn't even vote this guy in. About the spanking scene in "Exit...", I didn't watch that movie until I'd been a part of the Corner community for a few months. I decided to keep coming anyway ;) Just teasing Paul. We all have our "Edens". Thanks for the tip on the show Sherrlyn. Hi Linda. Eve, you owe me an email. Tim where the heck are you? Dennis: Where do you think I live? Texas! But I still think that with technology being what it is with the satellite's and all we "merkins" as you called us should be able to watch tv from any country around this small world. Have any of you taken a look at Mars. It has really show up beautifully in our clear skies. Well, must go sort more junk for garage sale, Sherrlyn, sorry for slicing Te-xas off the continent. I misunderstood the program and thought it was one of those Australian productions we never get to see. Thanks for the information. I will look for it Sunday. Hoo-Rah, Te-xas Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 24, 2003 03:31 AMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77Your right about the close ups Grandma Mil. I think with how inexpensive the format is they should put both versions on the discs. I think most people would rather that then the fancy lable on one side. Sherrlyn and Inn, I agree. It's amazing that with our advanced telecommunications capability we see so little of the rest of the world's tv programing. Someone's clearly been programing America! Good night dear Mil, Paul and All Dhiana, congratulations to you!!! I never had any doubts about you passing that exam:-) Hope you enjoyed the Guinness, personally, I can't stand that stuff, it ruined my willingness to and enjoyment of drink any beer for years, but then I decided to give beer another try, not Guinness though. I had a Margarita in your honour. Yumm! Texas, it's nice to hear from you and I'm glad you got through the blackout okay. How are you doing? Sherrlyn, what do you do when you don't do taxes or laundry? Just curious (and teasing,) and thanks for pointing out "Code 11-14" tonight, I would have missed that and then I'd be mad at myself. Dennis, enjoy your dancing with "the French invented medieval torture device" aka as Dance Belt. :-) I'm so glad it's you and not me. I'm looking into getting myself signed up for some dance classes, but as one of the classes I’m teaching is an evening class, I'm rather limited in available evenings. Unlike you, I was the kid who did the kicking and screaming because I wasn’t allowed to take dance lessons. Now I’m having a difficult time choosing where to take the lessons, not sure what I should be looking out for either. Mum thinks I’m too old now to start dance lessons, I’ll just have to show her how wrong she is :-) Whit, I don’t know what’s up with your email or the internet, I sent you at least three messages and it seems that you aren’t getting them. Wonder where the heck they disappeared to in cyberspace. Oh and regarding the ACE documentary, come up here for a visit and you can watch the tape to your heart’s content!!! You know you have a standing invitation, does that help as another incentive? Tim, where are you??? You are so very quite these days. I hope you are off having fun and not working too much. And Peter, swearing like that??? totally cracked me up. I hope you had happier sounds fill your quite office after that. Evelyn, keep me informed on your dance progress. There is an organization called DMA (Dance Masters of America) www.dma-national.org Look up the chapter in your area and call. They can direct you to a good school. Mothers are always right unless they are wrong. Ask her if 60 is too old. Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 25, 2003 03:52 AMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77Flash, everyone, especially you music lovers!! (That must include everyone on PC!) The newest immergence of the movie musical as a force to be reckoned with, is highlighted by a great article I found in the San Francisco Chronicle...(I do a lot of surfing.) Go to: www.sfgate.com Go to left columns, find and click "Entertainment" (right under "Sports") and find article: "Thanks, Chicago." A large number of movie musicals are being planned. It seems like this is happening, not because of "Moulin Rouge" but because of "Chicago" and its success! Good for us, the consumers, young and old! I am looking forward to the life and music of Cole Porter (with Kevin Kline) as starters. Oh, be still my heart! Love ya all, Grandma Posted by: Grandma Mil on August 25, 2003 04:48 AMfrom IP: 168.192.88.142Evelyn: First I spend way too much time on this computer. I've spent the last 2 weeks on e-bay buying cotton yarn. I crochet while I watch TV, which I also do to much of, but the cat needs a place to sleep. (she curls up in my lap while I watch TV and Crochet.) What do I watch on tv, HGTV (think I may learn something), TLC (trading spaces and While you were out)hoping to figure out new ways to get DH to complete projects around the house, Bravo, and the Discovery Channel. Well must get off of here and go find poster board and white spray paint. Hugs to all,
Here in the hills it comes on at 9pm eastern timeon channel 12 wowk. Good night Ma and All Our Paul: a red herring? I think that was a miscasting. In my opinioin Paul could have done an excellent job portraying one of the gallant, high ranking members of the air crew, if not the pilot !!!!! Is anyone with me on this? I did enjoy your performance Paul. I'm not an actor, but well done. The guy that got the lead was on a roll. He landed the JAG series around the same time. Personally, I think your performance evidenced more versatility; he often plays the same character (tough, smart military dude). He was a new face though and they want "fresh meat" in Hollywood. He did a made for tv movie around the same time. Celebrity's all about media saturation I believe, Posted by: Whitney on August 25, 2003 11:15 AMfrom IP: 129.71.185.211I said ( after seeing him a t.v. movie here in the states tonight)" Damn he still looks great, the bastard, and he's a really fine actor." Hi all. Been lurking and reading recently here in what appears to be a very warm and friendly place. I'm hoping it's ok to just drop in - uninvited- and grab a brew and make myself comfy. I'm from NYC and I send you all my best... and to Paul, I offer thanks for the sharing of his theatrical talents and his poetic soul. Bless you, man. Be well all and thanks for letting me park my mouse for awhile. xox, Danny Posted by: Danny on August 25, 2003 11:29 AMfrom IP: 205.184.184.154Hey, guys, in this weeks TVWeek section of the Chicago Tribune in the question and answer section somebody wrote in about Paul. Here it is~ Wooo...I haven't posted in a long time. I didn't watch the movie tonight, just taped it. I saw that there was a plane in it, and I'm like, not tonight! I am leaving on a plane tomorrow to fly to Florida. It's going to be my first time and I'm actually really nervous. I'll make sure that I watch the movie when I get back, if I get back. ;) Catherine...Thanks for typing the question and answer. I'm glad that Paul is still being talked about for Strictly Ballroom. Posted by: Jenny on August 25, 2003 11:41 AMfrom IP: 65.26.192.187While you were out the great support system that has been created on this blog site has continued in such a wonderful way. I always better after I read many of this posts, ok I had a good day too, so I am just extending my happiness. On Monday August 25th at 6:03pm I said: Hell, I've never heard of Code 11-14. Best check it out at the video shop, next time I'm there. And then I muttered some more less-than-intelligible stuff, switched off the 'puter and went home. Posted by: Peter on August 25, 2003 04:05 PMfrom IP: 203.41.31.84Well, Paul did a fine job, as always, but the story was a little corny. As someone, above, pointed out, DJE played the same character he always plays. I guess a good many famous actors have done just that. I thought it was unfortunate that the writers used Paul's character and then just threw him away (sounds like Hollywood). Since he was supposed to be an ex-flight attendent, I would have brought him in at the end to help save the day. But then, they didn't ask me. There's probably a hero clause in DJE's contract. Anyway, it certainly was good to see Paul on screen again. Nice job Paul! Danny, stick around. We guys sometimes feel outnumbered (although we really, truly love it). Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 25, 2003 06:00 PMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77Dear Mercedes, Please click on my name below, and you will get my email address, write a word or two, and I will be able to send you the site information on "Follies 2003". Evelyn planned and set up the beautiful website. Whitney came to see Follies (from WV to Florida) stayed with us for 3 days, and took the wonderful backstage pictures. We had never met before...what a marvelous experience! Evelyn and Whit are so DELICIOUS... (a grandma's term of endearment) but I guess everyone on PC had that figured out! Peace and love to all! Eh.) Sorry Texas dropped off the map. I missed reading that in the news. ;-) Au revoir~ Welcome Danny! The more the merrier. We have a large parking lot. Catherine, thanks for the info. We all love to hear about anything relating to Paul. Happy flying Jenny. You're probably in the air by now. Safe trip to you. Dennis, I agree, they wasted Paul's role in this movie. I have a strong suspicion that, like many movies, the story line changed along the way and some of his work might have ended up on the editing room floor. Mercedes, you'll enjoy Evelyn's well done slide show of pictures (that really was nice Evelyn). We hope to collaborate on another when I get around to doing video captures from Follies: The Movie. Good morning Millie! You're such a sweetie. I think we have a mutual admiration society going here. Don't work too hard Dhi! Tim, where are you pal? I'm believing for things to go well for you. Send me an email and let me know how the inquisition went. Peace and Love to All, Dhiana, What makes you think I was having a conversation with an inanimate object? Code 11-14 what a sad-sack of a movie. I of course agree that Paul's talent was misused. It was nice to see him though, so thanks to Sherylyn for the info. Goodness, yall have been busy. Do (150) 10th, 11th, and 12th graders count as inanimate objects? They really don't move much, particularly after lunch. They also seem to glaze over at the mention of anything scientific. Who knows? Evelyn and Sara L, like I tell my students... you don't fail until you quit trying. Who do you admire more: the person who walks 20 miles to their goal or the person who walks 2 miles to their goal? If every step short of the goal is a failure, then the person who walked 20 miles has failed many more times than the person who walked 2 miles... but.. I admire your persistence. I can certainly relate. I have been in grad. school off an on. Bouncing from genetics to education to physical geography/meteorolgy. The hardest thing I have ever had to do was to quit the genetics program for which I had prepared for more than half my life. I was miserable and I made my husband and family miserable with worry for me. Now, I teach. My class motto, "gnothe sauton." It means "know thyself." It was inscribed on the oracle at Delphi (greek mythology), along with 2 other sayings. Everything in moderation was another one of them. I can't remember the other. I am happy teaching. Happiness is not something to be traded lightly for another "peel of the onion." I think that I need to think some more. Sometimes, I just get tired of thinking. Ready to go out and live some. Kat Posted by: Katherine on August 26, 2003 11:16 AMfrom IP: 12.239.252.107Yes, I have to agree they could have expanded Paul's role and it wouldn't have hurt the movie one bit. Seems it has alreadt been shown overseas, and did not gain rave reviews. Too many thins going on that are just not feasibly possible. But it was good to see Paul back on the screen, a little more mature, DH thought a little heavier, (but time will do that for all of us, DH included). Thought he played an angry young man very well. Anyway, hope all are doing well. Welcome, Danny! Congratulations, Dhiana! Happy trails, Jenny! And all you dancin' folk (Evelyn, Dennis, Tim, et al), kick up those heels! I was so happy to be dancing the Hora at a cousin's wedding last night. "Look at me. I can actually move. This is fun.", I thought as we all linked hands and circled the bride and groom. Then I think I whacked some kid in the head and the magic was gone. Ay me. So, yeh, I missed the movie. Yesterday was non-stop activity. Overall, a good day. Glad to hear all is well with you, Mercedes. Innussiq, my husband and I both talk to ourselves. Usually, it's like reinforcing a mental note. But when my husband mumbles to himself while I'm trying to get work done, it's a huge distraction. Sherrlyn, you sound like me — always working on something. I need to finish reorganizing my home and start taking some real time-off, though. High anxiety levels around here with government-politics stuff/business launch/kids to school and lessons and such. I said, "How can I be so tired? It's only 8 o'clock! 'Night, All! Here is what I say: What's up, Paul? I saw you on the movie CODE 11-14. I even liked your red shirt. Although I missed most of the movie. Did you play the good guy or the bad guy? Don't forget, Paul, we have two Sara's now. Sara Lovett and me. I will therefore put a w from my last name. Linda Posted by: Linda Thomas on August 27, 2003 08:45 PMfrom IP: 12.212.246.198Greetings to Linda and a special good day to All, It's been a beautiful summer here in WV. It gets a bit humid at times, but once you get up on the hill a cooling breeze makes it all worth while. I hope everyone can get out and enjoy the day. Katherine, I know the overeducated, ego you speak of. I'm having an email debate with a mathematics professor at Yale. He's blinded by his theoretical models and equations. His education seems to have hurt his intuitive abilities, but I've also read ot mathematicians and other scientist making giant intuitive leaps. Go figure? Please pursue your dreams even if it means jumping through those academic hoops again. It sounds like something you want, but in t truth only you can "know thyself". Posted by: Whitney on August 28, 2003 02:31 AMfrom IP: 129.71.185.76Whit, darlin', while I applaude your chutzpah for getting into it online with that Math Prof. from Yale, GIRL...we're going to have to start calling you "Velma". ;-) That being said, Peter, as long as your other Selves were talking back, there is nothing to fear. And yes, "they" count as "animate" so no cat for you. (I almost said, "No pussy for you" but that is just WRONG, and innappropriate, and lends itself to all sorts of squicky moments that no one on PC needs to deal with...so, you're catless. Period.) ;-) I said: With love, Hi back to Inn, Dennis, Whitney, Mercedes and everyone at PC muchiesmoochies ;-) Dennis: yik blech on the Dance Belt thang...whoaboy! ye i guess it does sound a bit bizarre to think about, remember or discuss things like that - that happened in human history...i think it's shocking to contemplate that human beings did this to one another and went to great lengths in designing such devices. Maybe learning/hearing about this keeps us aware of how far we have come in terms of taming the barbaric sides...and also how careful and diligent we must be in maintaining and still even further developing our civility and compassion...perhaps?
" I AM................" if one is so inclined to believe in a Supreme Being or Higher Consciousness, that powerful Self-defining (active/moving) statement or response to one who is/was looking, pretty much covers it all in a way (to me - at least IMHO)...?
Dhi: also, congrats on passing your test?!! Yay yay yay! hey, that deserves some smugness! Folks, Have to run, too bloody flat out. Posted by: Peter on August 28, 2003 06:29 AMfrom IP: 203.41.31.216Peter, that is really (to quote Katalina) kewl. And bloody overdue. I second the Horay! Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 28, 2003 08:26 AMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77In fact I'll third it with proper spelling Hooray!!! Posted by: Dennis on August 28, 2003 08:27 AMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77Hello! It's been a few days since I said hello, kind of having a lot of fun being back at work, this week during teacher orientation and just loving the energy and creativity of my old and new colleagues and my own creativity is coming back, so I'm (mostly) having a blast. The saga of my ever shifting teaching appointments seems to continue (sigh, yesterday I was bounced back to two courses and 67%, no benefits etc.) and a colleague of mine when she heard about this today, is now splitting her third course with me, taking a pay cut herself to help me out, but to also to have a bit more time with her kids that way. This totally moved me to tears this afternoon--There is a lot of goodness out there in humans, despite the coldness and self-absorption of so many others. I think I'm currently at an 84% appointment (again with benefits), this is the 5th altered appointment in 2 1/2 weeks,I hope it's the last change, since classes start on Tuesday--yippeee!!! It feels really good to be back doing what I feel passionate about. This gets me to Katherine's question: "Who do you admire more: the person who walks 20 miles to their goal or the person who walks 2 miles to their goal?" I admire both!!!, because they both made it there in their own unique way and getting there the fastest or by the shortest way isn't automatically the best way; you might miss a lot on the way by rushing by. I also don't think that every step short of the goal is a failure. I believe that each step is almost more important than reaching the goal, it's part of the individual learning process and should be squarely integrated in the teaching process and celebrated. I hate this assumption that there is only one way to achieve learning and often scream on the inside when a student demands that I tell him/her what the one way is that will give them the desired higest grade. They so totally cheat themselves out of learning and finding their own way to get there. Sherrlyn, that does sound cool, I still prefer knitting to crocheting, but I've done a lot of both over the summer, lots of baby outfits for my friends who all seem to be having kids this year. I wonder if they all planned this together ... My cat ususally sits right on top of the yarn or "object" i'm creating, so that I can't do anything. I thought she just liked the feel of the material, so I made her a blanket, guess what, she's ignoring it. Spoiled brat that she is! Peter, I still find the thought of you talking to inanimate objects much more interesting--leaves me more room for whacky scenarios :-) Katalina, I usually "ignore" the medieval torture devices as best as I can, and I didn't mean just physically, although I'd do that too if I were near them. I'm too easily spooked, Shudder!!! Thus I'm still glad Dennis will be the one dealing with that dance belt thingy and not me ... (sorry Dennis!) Dhi, I'd say you are totally entitled to feeling smug. Enjoy it while it lasts, but hey, where's the picture so we can all get to know the "New Hottie on the Ave." Okay, I must do some more prepping for my 2 1/2 classes, so off I go, happily :-) But before I do that, a special hello to Grandma, Whit (Keep bugging the mathematician, he needs to become more flexible in his thinking!), Diane (slow down! and don't worry), Linda (thanks always for your wonderful special greetings and I'm totally looking forward to the fall and the goregeous MN fall leave colors!), Danny (a belated welcome to you), Dennis (probably counting of days before he starts dance lessons, oh by the way, since my Mum thinks I'm too old at 33, 60 is definitely too old in her opinion, not mine!!!), Paul (who's probably very happy to have that darn cat finally out of the bag re. the Full Monty! Congrats to you on being THE star of the show!) and everyone else. So how many rules of grammar, writing etc. did I violate in this last paragraph??? Darn rules, are they there to be broken? If you answer that with Yes, don't tell my students, okay? Posted by: Evelyn on August 28, 2003 09:25 AMfrom IP: 134.84.252.74I wear a medieval torture device everyday..it's called a bra, not quite medieval but still torturous. Dennis you have my sympathy. Hello everyone and thank you for all your kind words of welcome. It certainly is a diverse bunch here. Thank God! Phew, a moment to spare! Evelyn, the ONLY inanimate object that I speak to is myself. At least, I do give the appearance of being inanimate sometimes. Dhiana, thanks for the vote of confidence. Peter, five cats, you say. It's a known fact that ones fondness for cats increases exponentially by their number. I figure that in no time at all, you will be sharing their litter box. Danny, from what I hear, in some cases it wouldn't make a lot of difference! Innussiq, you don't have to say anything, I just like typing your name. Evelyn, yes, counting the days with fear and trembling. Well, off to the gym. If I'm going to be a prince I guess I have to look the part (Here, Prince. Come here, boy. Good dog!). Dennis Posted by: Dennis on August 28, 2003 07:44 PMfrom IP: 68.85.153.77All ladies on the list who would be Paul's dresser say "aye". AYE! Dennis, thanks for the smile!
Dhiana said: Oh, I would just LOVE to hear what ya'll think I look like so when the picture goes up we can give a "Who's Closest" prize...heehee...now I'll have to think up something good for that one! (but all you cheaters out there can't put "short hair"! ya hear?) ;-) (Evelyn's going to go make me do those glammer shots now, aren't you? ;-) Ciao, Inn: AYE! lolol (waving hands in the air...waving like i just don't care....AYE! )
evelyn, i'm doing fine. getting restless in current ad job so i'm considering a total change, but will keep you posted. sounds like you're happy to be back at work despite all the hullabaloo. i hope the sand settles round your feet soon so you can see clear to the bottom. glad to hear paul's top billing for full monty down under.....finally. he so deserves this. take care all. Posted by: texas on August 29, 2003 03:10 AMfrom IP: 208.47.173.12Anyone else out there think pantyhose are a medievel torture device as well? (invented by some sadistic man, I'm sure!) Posted by: Barbara/NC on August 29, 2003 03:11 AMfrom IP: 208.27.124.202Here's a funny story for all you cat people out there. My two golden retrievers, Holly and Tasha, are VERY well behaved. We have invisible fence but they don't even wear the radio collars because they know their perimeter lines. Well...our neighbors have four cats who understand this invisible fence situation very well. They meander along that fence line without stepping one paw over it. They know my girls won't go over the line. I'm sure they think they're a couple of goody-two-shoes dogs and all that. I know I've seen those cats sneer at the dogs while parading by, noses in the air, which sends the dogs into fits of barking. Tasha sits on the property line and shakes because she is so excited to get that close to a cat. The cats will actually yawn as she is barking at them, so confident the dogs will not go over the line. And they haven't ....yet. Holly is easily distracted with a frisbee, but Tasha is on a mission. She has a date with destiny. That destiny is one big, bad, long haired cat named Ashley. I feel a rumble coming on. Are any of you familiar with Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh? I went to see him speak last Friday and had to leave along with several hundred other people because we couldn't hear! I'm over it now, but I was so disappointed! Had to settle for a walk along the Lake Michigan shore with my sweetie, which was nice in itself. Dhi, I picture you as ethereal with a little bit of naughty thrown in. Eyes that sparkle a little too much, if you know what I mean! How much hair did you have cut off? Mine is long but I wear it up a lot. Don't think I'm ready to go short quite yet. If it works for you, let me know. Details and all that! Welcome Danny, and hello to the Collective Corner! Evelyn, I love Peck's definition of the word education in The Road Less Traveled. He notes that it comes from the Latin educare, which literally translates as "to bring out of" or "to lead forth". He then says, "Therefore, when we educate people, if we use the word seriously, we do not stuff something new into their minds; rather, we lead this something out of them; we bring it forth from the unconscious into their awareness. They were the possessors of the knowledge all along". I'll bet you're a wonderful educator. Flat Out Peter, I imagine you to be like one of those condensed sponges that is small and compact until you pour water on it. I think a few bottles of beer should take you from flat out to fantastic in no time! Love and Light, Posted by: Michelle on August 29, 2003 03:38 AMfrom IP: 12.251.106.141 Belated congratulations on passing the exam, Dhiana. And, yes, I want to see that photo, too. I still can't figure out how to get my photo up on the Yahoo site for Paul. Hi, Linda. Hi, Evelyn. So glad the schedule is working out for you. That's some co-worker you have there. Innussiq and Katalina, AYE,AYE,AYE! (How many votes do I get? (Not even one vote seems to count in California. Sob). Danny, glad to hear from you again. We all agree with you that Paul will be fabulous in Full Monty. But, listen, you don't need my permission to drop by Paul's Corner. Maybe if we all save our pennies, we can drop by his pub someday. Hi, Barbara/NC. I agree. Pantyhose belong on the list with bras, girdles (I think they still make some spandex version of this device), and my personal unfavorite — heels, especially the 3"-4" versions... excrutiatingly painful to wear. And if putting yourself through all of that isn't enough to sway the opposite sex, women can spend gobs of money getting breast enlargements and having Botox injected into their faces to smooth away the wrinkles (which partially paralyzes the face). Seems pretty creepy to me. I'm thankful that I have a real person for a partner who loves me in spite of my wrinkles and gray hair. I have two cats and two dogs. I talk to all of them and to my plants. When my black cat (Midnight) mews at me and I mew back, I just have to hope that I'm not conveying some unpleasant message like "Go pee on the one chair you haven't yet destroyed." The smaller cat likes to pull small plush toy animals out of my youngest son's room and drag them to me like she's delivering prey at my feet. On nights when my son sleeps over at a friend's house, she litters the hallway with her "catches". Alright, it's dinner time for everyone. Gotta run! (I'm very well trained.) Diane Posted by: Diane on August 29, 2003 09:20 AMfrom IP: 24.130.221.100That would be fun to travel to Australia, always wanted to go all my friends have except for me (boo hoo hoo) but I will. We could set up a group trip to Paul's pub where he can give us lectures on beer cause god knows I know nothing. Momma Mil- I enjoyed your pictures very much I hope when I am your age I still enjoy life the way you do. I talk to my parrot and he just swears at me ( I did not teach him bad words I inherited the bird from my dad) not very good for the ego :~{ I would like to go on the junket to Australia, too. My boss stopped through on his way to New Guinea last year and took a bunch of pictures. Hello everyone. Seems I missed a TON. Double damn on missing the show. anybody tape it? It would have been nice to just see Paul on the screen. The Timmer Posted by: Tim Hord on August 30, 2003 09:20 AMfrom IP: 216.78.43.102Dearest Timmer, I was just about to ask, "Where's our Timmer?" and lo and behold here you are, bless you. You have been sounding so upbeat in all of your last posts, it's a pleasure for those of us who care so much about you, and that includes just about everyone! Good for you, for going on the Weight Watchers program! Conventional wisdom states that men lose more weight quicker than women. The point system on WW allows you a lot of leeway, as long as you count the points...write them down, bring your point book with you at work, etc. Good luck, I have lost 14 lbs. in 4 months...no big deal, rather disappointing, for I am at the gym almost every day too. I was on the South Beach Diet, but it's not working for me anymore, so I too have switched to WW. Maybe you and I will be dieting buddies! We'll talk about our successes...anything else is taboo! We didn't get Paul's film on Forida TV. However, "Salem's Lot" was adapted from Stephen King's book, and was filmed near Melbourne, Australia, and although all of the major stars are American, like Rob Lowe, Donald Sutherland, and Samantha Mathis, some of the minor parts are played by Aussies, including Tara. A little town near Melbourne was made to look like a typical small town in New England, for the film is about the invasion of vampires. (I'll bet Tara will be thrilled to hear about Paul and "The Full Monty" and will undoubtedly see it! I'd love to be a fly on the wall that night!) Love and peace, and a wonderful Labor Day weekend to everyone! Grandma Posted by: Grandma Mil on August 30, 2003 06:11 PMfrom IP: 63.176.25.12Just to throw some numbers at you guys..Code 11-14 got 11.8 million viewers and came in third on the night beating CSI in viewers. So YOU'RE the one beating me out on all those eBay auctions! tsk tsk...better watch out, I just got a raise so am able to go up a whole 'nother DOLLAR on some of those "mixed lot" items! Woo-hoo!!! (heehee, no, seriously...I'm more interested in the handspun stuff, wools, alpaca, mohair...anything funky feeling that I can knit/crochet into scarves for my fab and funky friends...uh-oh...HOW many of you are here on this Corner? I'd better get busy!) ;-) If you need any pink bucle, lemme know...I've got SCADS that I'd be more than happy to ship off to you. Email me privately. ;-) Michelle, I got a foot cut off...eek! My bare neck! And I have brown eyes that do probably sparkle a bit too much, but as of late, I have been able to contain myself and not get into too much trouble. Hi Tim! Happy Birthday to your baby! Awwwe...they grow so fast. Just sent my baby to Kindergarten yesterday. And only a slight sniffle from me when he got on the bus! His Big First Grade brother was there for him, so all was well. Work calls...but so does the other post so... *poof* Posted by: Dhiana on September 4, 2003 07:57 PMfrom IP: 64.132.54.59I recently acquired "Strictly Ballroom" and fell in love. I am searching for other movies you have acted in. If I every get to Australia, I'll up your brewpub. I am a widow of 64. I love movies, horse back riding, and gardening. I watch the above video at least once a week. Marge McGee Posted by: Marge McGee on November 3, 2003 08:43 AMfrom IP: 205.187.144.217NOTE: Comments are moderated.
