A funny thing happened on the way home from the race

Yes it is all done over and finished! I have had the week of training, the two qualifing sessions and the race itself - in fact I have had an absolutely awesome time!!! It is such a magnificant event and now I have been lucky enough to do it twice!

The celebrity race at the Australian Grand Prix is what I am refering to. A heap of past winners and place getters were invited back to have a best of the best race to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the grand prix being held in Melbourne. There were 4 past winners and a couple of seconds and thirds with a smattering of past favourites - so I wouldnt really say it was a best of the best but it was pretty stiff competition.

We get put up in a hotel on the Sunday and are kept there until the following Sunday. This is so we can concentrate on the training and the media calls during the week of training. You need to concentrate on the training because we are in fact going out to race a car at high speeds in very close proximation to other cars and in some cases too close! I have never had an accident on the road but I was hit by other cars several times during my training and on race day! Talk about exciting!!!

Any way the training was fantastic - any one living in Victoria or NSW should make the effort to do the BMW driver training course! The week was daunting exhilerating, frightening, competitive, challenging, fun, rewarding, fascinating and really really enjoyable! To cut a long blog short I was very happy with how I went. I was considered by trainers and competitors to be one of the fast guys but I wasnt so sure. Luckily they were right and I qualified second fastest and therefore second on the grid for race day. James Tomkins the winner from last years was very good and consistent was on pole and I knew would be hard to pass let alone beat! There were a couple of guys behind me that I knew could and would give me some real trouble and they did! Come the race James took off with a good start and slowly pulled away from me. Guy Andrews - past winner and Iron Man - couldnt get by me for the first lap but on the styart of the second came in to turn one too hot and used me as a braking device almost sending me off the track. Thankfully I hang on but had lost my momentum into turns two and three and so I watched guy slowly pull away. By the way he set the fastest lap ever for the ten year history of the celebrity challenge!!!! I recovered my momentum but not quick enough and I had Steven Bradbury - gold medal olympic speed skater and previous second placer -right on my clacker for a couple of laps. I was faster in some corners and could pull away but he was deeper on the brakes in other corners and closed up again. End of lap four he came in a little too deep and gave me a kiss on my rear bumper. I had the corner lined up very well and so got a really good drive out and down the straight where as Steven lost his momentum from the touch up and I pulled away from him to keep and take third spot on the podium!!!!

So the three guys on the podium were fittingly past winners from previous races. Hard fought race for me. I am really happy with my race and my place and that takes me to my topic: Some people are really happy for me and enjoyed the race and the fight for the place etc but quite often I have had people come up to me over the last couple of days and shrug their shoulders and look at me questioningly and say..."what happened to you, how come you only got third.... you should have caught them and passed them..." etc etc

Just for the record I would have if I could have but they were too fast for me on the day - they were the only two people out of the 26 racers on the track that were faster than me that day! My goal for the week was to go for a win and if that didnt seem opportune go for a podium!

I realised my goal, am happyand proud. I thank the trainers and my fellow racers for a magnificant week and I congratulate everyone for bring the cars home safe. James and Guy congrats well done - lets do it again sometime!

Congratulations, Paul!!!! Well done and I can really sense from your entry how much you enjoyed this, the competition, the speed, the training, the being kissed on your bumper (nice image), the entire experience. I hope this week and the energy coming from it will give you a boost for a long time and carries the joy and excitement over into other areas of your life. I'll toast your accomlishment later tonight, got to go to work now.

Paul, just forget about all those losers who ask why didn't you win. The winning was being in the race at all. Like Evelyn said it sounds like you had a great time and what could be more important than that?
WEE! Now I am part of the "Fabulous Nine" I love it. Cheers to the rest of the gang. Grandma Mil, my sister's boyfriend is Jewish, so I asked him what to say, that is how I knew the 120 year thing, and I hope it comes true. You and Ellie are two of the best people on this planet and you deserve every wonderful moment you ever experience.
Love to all

Dearest Paul,

How sweet it is, being King of the Road, Top of the Heap, (almost) and to us, you're always First in Our Hearts. "It's not how you win but how you played the game" (OMG, how banal, how untrue!!!!!)

Innussiq, Ellie and I are still reveling in the anniversary goodies (video tape, pictures, the beautiful cards, the director's chair) that all you chickies generously gave us, and Evelyn put together! This definitely are gifts that will keep on giving all the days of our lives!

Anyone that comes into our home, whether the accountant or the wash machine repair guy are led to the shrine and shown "The Chair"...it never fails to bring ooohs and aaahs!

"Du bist a shanie madel, und zaher klug!" Ask your sister's boyfriend about that one! (I'll bet Evelyn knows it, and that goes for her too, and that could go for all my chickies, come to think of it!)

Shalom and Love,

Mil

Course I know it, Grandma & Thank you and the same is true about you and Ellie, of coures in his case you'd have to change madel to junge or bub! :-)

Getting cought up on DWTS, man you judges are so much fun --except for those moments when you are rather tough!!

HA Ha...and no Evelyn didn't tell me...
"you're a very nice girl, and very smart (intelligent)"
I think you are the same..are are all the Fab Nine! The story of how I found the translation is a good one...but I'll keep it for now!!
Peace

Wow PAUL sounds like you have been doing wonderful. Congrats. I haven't blog in such a long time. I love your previous blog. It sure helped me during a trying time.
EVELYN: Great to see ya here. I start chemo on the 16th. I'm not afraid. I look at the bright side, I won't have to shave and I'll loose that mustash. HA. I've already bought some cool hats and my friend of 30 yrs has let me borrow her mother. I call her my adopted mother. They have been great.
Grandma Mil: I sure could use a hug. Sami is doing great at her deaf school. Of course the hormones are kicking in. She is 11 going on 12. IIIIkks. Casey is 13. Is there a booklet for this? Chicken Soup for the mother with pre-teenagers.
Any words of wisdom? Anyone?

Paul sounds like you have been sowing your garden so I wont remind you to sow.
Whit are you there? I need a butt kick to get over this hurdle. Hope everyone is well. TAKE CARE.
Warm regards Suz

Dear Suz,

My goodness, it's been so long since you were on the Corner, and we're happy to have you back! Can you feel my hug of welcome? (I can squeeze pretty hard, as my FIF chickies have experienced!)

Sorry to hear about your health challenges. I'm sure that your courage and determination will lead you back to good health once more. Our prayers and best wishes are with you!

Good to hear that Sami is doing so well. Don't fret, the preteen years go quickly, and then, there's those teenage years...

Inn, "shanie", the way I learned it, means "pretty, lovely, beautiful, gorgeous",
and that describes all my chickies! (It's also used by adoring relatives to describe females, no matter what age!)

Promsale? Don't know how that got in, but at one time I was thinking (for a second) of getting a
bridal dress for a wedding anniversary renewal of our vows after 52 years, but there ain't no size in the whole bridal dress industry that would fit old Mil these days!

Shalom and Love,

Mil

Good job, Paul! As Millie aptly said, you are always first in our hearts. I follow NASCAR and enjoyed your description of the race from the driver's point of view. That was a first for me, outside of watching my husband drag race and hearing his descriptions of being in the cockpit.

Mil and Ellie, many happy returns! I think it would be lovely if you found a beautiful gown to wear when you renew your vows, but then, no matter what you wear, your happiness will outshine any dress!

Now, off to work I go.

A big wave to everyone this morning. Have a great weekend.

Be well.

Paul,

Congrats on the race! It is so good to read that you enjoyed the experience so much ... that's what counts ... coming in third is nice, too! :-)

So you and Paul Newman have a lot in common. You both are named Paul, both are actors (you have the edge here because you are also a dancer), both are family men who put their marriage and family first, and both are adventurous and love car racing!!!! Oh, and you both have created your own recipes: he is known for his delicious salad dressings and spaghetti sauce, and you for your tempting peach ale! ;-)

Hugs to you and the family,

welcome back and congratulations on another baby. I remember you had some difficulties during the pregnancy, right? Glad you are doing well and what a beautiful name for the little girl. Give her a kiss from me, okay?

Three girls are terrific! Paul has three, Ellie and I have three, and now you!

We just became great-grandparents again, and that makes 5, and twins are expected in May,

It's hard to believe that our eldest daughter is the grandmother of these children.(She has nine children.) They all live in Israel, and we plan to visit there in May...haven't seen them in 6 years.

Evelyn, your FIF website is awesome! You did a marvelous and creative job, bringing back such warm and wonderful memories!

I am going to let you post the address, for you deserve the honor!

Abeth, I'll let you and everyone else know soon where the Follies & FiF website is. I did promise everyone who came to Florida that they would get to look at the site first to make sure there weren't any pictures up there that s/he didn't like and as of right now, I haven't heard back from everyone, so can't reveal it. Must keep my promises!

Don't ask me for any advice on how to raise three girls, you should talk to my Mum, she's done it and I'd say pretty successfully too, although I'm going t give my sisters and myself a little bit of credit for that as well. :-) Best wishes to you though!

Dearest Grandma, congrats on being great-grandma for the fifth time and almost the seventh time. I hope the twins will be born before or during your visit in Israel in May so that you get to meet them all. I'm so glad you are going to visit your family again. Not sure how you make it that long. If I didn't make it home in two years, I get very antsy and have to go. Hugs & kisses to you and Elliott (with 2 ts, I might just learn it one of these days)

Hey guys,

Long time, but not without thinking of you. New babies, races etc..

Glad to hear you had such a great experience Paul. You are sowing and you will reap.

Hi Auntie Mil...so glad you are still enjoying FIF. And congratulations on the ggbabies. Wow! I bet you can't wait to see your family in Israel. 6 years?!? That's a long time, even if you talk on the phone.

So glad everyone is doing well. Still plugging along here. It's my anniversary on the 21st. We're going to celebrate Friday night. I bought my wife a new diamond ring. I'm taking her to her favorite restaurant (she doesn't know which one) and I've planned a trip to a Resort north of Atlanta. A romance package. Spa Tub, Champagne with chocolate dipped strawberries. At least my wife will enjoy the bubbles. Massages on Saturday. Should be great.

Love and Peace to everyone

Dearest Tim,

I know everyone on PC is happy to have you back, and to learn you and your wife will be celebrating your annversary! Congratulations in advance!

That romance package sounds like something out of a Hollywood movie, but now you and your wife are the stars!

Chocolate dipped strawberries? Sounds very erotic, but too many calories for this old broad!

Have a wonderful time, and keep writing to us, we've missed you!

Hi guys,

ABETH: Congrats to you and your family on the newest addition to the unit! So happy to hear both mom and baby are doing well. :-)

GRANDMA MIL: Congratulations to you and Ellie on your fifth great-grandchild, what a wonderful thing it is to live to see four generations together! :-)

TIM: Good to hear from you and congrats to you and your wife on your 21st anniversary! You certainly have a romantic celebration planned and I'm sure she will love it! :-)

EVELYN: You are as thoughtful as ever, making sure everyone is happy with the photos on the website. :-) We need more people like you in this world! Thanks so much for setting up the website so we can enjoy the FIF, too. Looking forward to the unveiling.

Yesterday was a great day because my mom started the muscle-building excercises during her physical therapy session. So far they had concentrated on getting back the range of motion to the shoulder, but she's doing well enough for them to start strengthening the muscle now. Yipeee! :-)

Hugs to all,
Nertha

Hey all!

Tim: A very happy anniversary!!! Enjoy!

Abeth: Congrats on the new addition. I'm jealous.

All: I spend yesterday in an MRI tube. Fun, fun! Remember the lump I told you about. Well, when my onc. saw (I mean felt it), he wanted an MRI on it. He said that ultrasound wouldn't be able to see well enough because it's between my scars. I'm nervous, but optomistic (and I can't spell!). Onc. thinks it's scar tissue because of it's location. I won't know anything until Monday probably. Maybe today, but it's doubtful.

If you pray keep me in your prayers. Otherwise keep everything crossed that you can!!!!!

Jill, Ellie will again say those special prayers for good health that he says each week in synagogue.

Your name had already been added some time ago.

We'll wait to hear the good news! Our love and best wishes are with you!

Nertha, thanks for the congratulations on the birth of our 5th great-grandchild! We aren't the champs in our family...my eldest sister has 19 great-grandchildren! Yes, she lives in Israel too, and from 4 sons, has a dynasty of almost 50 and still counting! When they have a party, they don't need extra non-related people at all!

Hello All!

I was driving back home and I heard the infamous song from Men at Work which reminded me that I better get onto the corner!

Grandma Millie, congrads on the fifth grandchild. I hope that everything is well with Ellie and I will call you today! Promise.

Jill, I'm thinking positive for you.

Tim, my goodness! What a great thing you are doing for your wife. I'm jealous! LOL

I've had the past three days off. I go back into work this week-end. I'm picking up a piano keyboard that I ordered last week. For those of you who don't know which means everyone I played classical piano for fifteen years until I got sick playing Sonatas. Then a year ago I attended a jazz concert in a park and I loved it. So I'm going to start studying Jazz piano. I'm very excited with the new challange.

Take care all,

Dear Julie,

If you told me you used to play the piano, I forgot..a MM!

However, if you do well in your jazz piano courses, I will put you into "Follies 2007", so get busy!

Evelyn!!! Thanks for the site!!! I love that I can faces with names. Fantastic job. I love the "unoffical group photo". Thanks, thanks thank!

BTW - how much snow did you get? I hear southern Minnesota got clobbered. Most of the Twin Cities got inches BUT my town got nothing and I mean nothing!!! Not a flake (okay maybe one or two), but 15 minutes away got over an inch. We were right at the cut off line. Again Paul missed his chance to hang out in the snow. Hope you didn't have to shovel too much.

Jill

Posted by: Jill on March 19, 2005 08:24 PMfrom IP: 68.187.148.218

Hi Jill, we got plenty of snow, thank god it's already melting and I only had to shovel twice, which I don't mind at all, as I kind of like shoveling snow. don't ask me why.

How are you doing? I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers as well and wishing you a complete recovery.

Best wishes also to Nertha's Mum, i'm keeping her in my thoughts and prayers as well.

Have a great day everyone! :)

Evelyn I think you're crazy to like shoveling but that's just me!!!!! As for how I'm doing - I'm about ready to jump out of my skin. Hey Paul i haven't recieved my grade from the "strictly ballroom" assignment, but as soon as I get it i'll tell you how did it went and what my professor told me. One of the reasons that he played us the movie was because it had something to say...the phrase of "living with fear is like half living" or something like that.

Anyways...that's all i have to say so far. I haven't posted lately but I have been coming once in a while to read all of yous.

See yall later.

Jill, call the doctor's office and tell the nurse,(or whoever) that you are extremely anxious to hear the results of the test!

If they tell you that the results will not be available until a definite time, then that is that, but at least you tried. I know the waiting is the worst. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

Selena: "Vivir en miedo es como vivir a medias", or as Scott says, "a proverb!" and Fran explains, "yes, a life lived in fear is a life half-lived!"

Abeth, now you know what my FIF Chickies look like, and how we spent that wonderful weekend!

Okay the results are in and they only make more questions with little answers. Something in the MRI enhanced - which means it's not scar tissue. That is about the only answer I have right now. They suggested an ultrasound with is stupid because I just had one and that's what led to the MRI!!!!!!!!! My onc. nurse is calling today to clarify what is happening. Right now I just want them to biopsy it, so I can get a final answer. Limbo sucks!

GRand Mil, Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Sami is doing great. She's going to be taller than me soon..Her ASL has passed me up. I can hardly read her hands she's so fast.Congrats on your up coming 52 and gg babies. I'm sure you will look lovely in anything you wear. Your inner beauty shows through.

Evelyn, Thanks you too and where is this FIF web site. I'd love to see it.

Tim, Happy 21st!

Abeth, congrats on the newbee. How wonderful! Another little chikky for Gran Mil.

Jill, My prayers are for you tonight. I have worn simular shoes. I just had a sono, biop, surgery, bone scans, ect.. and I'm just starting chemo. If you have any questions, I might have some answers. Just keep a positive mind.

I see new and old faces on the blog. I'll have to catch up.

Did I read Peach brew somewhere. Somebody fill me in?

I think Whit sent me a kick yesterday. I had energy for two.

Paul. Sow Sow your garden. If ya want... Sow some peach hops my way. I could use a good drink. Not that I indulge much lately. But if I did I'd like to try the peach brew. When will it go on sale in California? I'll be waiting.....................

Take care

Suz- Thanks. I remember reading that you were starting chemo. I went through the whole process starting July 2003 to Feb 2004 with breast cancer. This is another lump. It stinks. Email me if you have questions as well.

Newest update- I have an ultrasound scheduled for Friday - Good Friday isn't that ironic. The rads dr wants a "targeted" ultrasound. I call it a "waste of time and money" ultrasound. I think the step after that is me pushing and pushing to get it taken. This is stupid and I need answers.

Paul - where are you? Come out, come out where ever you are! Seriously you've been quiet. I hope nothing is wrong. We miss you!

((hugs)) to all

Hello Gang,
I've fallen behind my reading but I wanted to wish those of you who are going through trying medical times the very best, I hope you are all well soon.
Grandma Mil, so sorry I haven't written. I hope you have a wonderful trip, I know you will.
Peace, Inn

Cutest one on the podium, no doubt! ;-)
Glad you had fun!

Hang in there Jill - you replace your skin cells every, what, two days or something, and pump new blood through your entire system in a matter of minutes, so just hold on for the New You to deal with this limbo! ;-) A little Buddha birdy told me that one.

BIG Hugs, Eve, Millie, TIM, you dog-you...what a celebration! Inn, hi lovey! WHERE's my "other" favourite Aussie stud, Peter???? Killed by tax time are ya? Big smooches, wherever you are, and to everyone else too.

Leaving for Fla. tomorrow (Daytona area) for my mom's wedding. I'll wave in a southerly direction, Millie!

Kisskiss,
Dhi

Lady Dhi, have a wonderful time at your Mom's wedding! Give her and your new step-dad our congratulations, or as they say, a big MAZELTOV, which means the same thing!

The weather should be summer-like, as it was today, in the 90s.

Shalom and Love,

Millie

Hi guys,

It sure is good to be back posting! I have been reading whenever I could, while dealing with a bad toothache, which is gone now since I had the tooth pulled. Not sure who won, me or the tooth, but at least I'm not in pain anymore. Seriously, though, compared to what Jill is going through, it was really nothing.

JILL: Hang in there, friend, it is hard not knowing for sure, but try to not imagine the worst. Your body reacts to what you are feeling, so if you have negative thoughts (or are very worried/scared) it will affect you adversely. They have found that faith and positive thoughts can make a difference in how the body regenerates itself. So positive thoughts, hugs, and prayers are being sent your way. :-) (((((hugs for Jill)))))

EVELYN: Thanks so much for the fantastic photo album of the follies. It is so nice to put together the names with the faces -- like Isabel said, it makes PC an even more comfortable place. :-)

PAUL: Hope things are going well for you, Andrea and the girls. We miss your posts, so I hope your silence is due to your being too busy with Merc's Own. :-)

GRANDMA MIL: You and Ellie radiate such energy, I really wish I had one third of it! :-) You are both very blessed to keep yourselves so active and cheerful and set a fine example for all of us to emulate.

ABETH: How is that sweet baby of yours? Hope you are you able to get enough rest. It's usually a rocky time while they find their routine and finally sleep most of the night. :-)

Hugs to everyone!

Happy Easter to all. Don't worry about the calories just eat the chocolate!
Peace,Inn

Posted by: Inn on March 27, 2005 11:31 PMfrom IP: 24.115.27.215

Like the way you think Inn, will comply and eat chocolate, without thinking of calories, just the pure enjoyment of the chocolate (that is if it's good chocolate :))

Happy Easter to everyone!

welcome back Katalina--how about that L.P.??? Be brave!

Jill, thinking of you and I hope that despite all the challenges and worries you have to face, you can find joy and peace today and every day. Sending you the image of a rainbow and all it contains in its meanings, hope, breathtaking beauty, suprise, joy.

Hi Dhi, hope you had a great time at your Mum's wedding.

Being able to put faces to names was pretty amazing and meeting these wonderful people in person at FIF was even more amazing. I got such a joyful energy boost out of that weekend, it was amazing!

Tim congratulations on your anniversary. Would you have thought that you'd be in that place a year ago? You've been through so much and deserve all the happiness. Thanks for the tip on chocolate covered strawberries. Made some yesterday to take along to the Easter get-together with my friends. Speaking of which, got to go.

Paul, I hope you and your family are doing well. Best wishes to you all!

Love Evelyn

Hi from a first time poster/long time lurker. Just wanting to say that I caught the Talking Heads interview this last Friday night with Paul as the first guest. Quite a nice little program, Paul - revealing without making you too vulnerable. and you kind of earned a compliment from the reviewer in the audstralian, when he compared yyou favourably with this weeks guest (who I have already forgotten), because of your honesty. Was it hot in the Brisbane powerhouse, or are you just a little sweater from way back?
I have to ask, why does anyone want to act? More specifically, once you've had the chance to act, and see that its so bloody difficult to get anything to act in, why do you want to keep on doing it?
Dance, I can understand. Music, i can understand.
But mate, acting? ?
I have many questions. Two that have been on my mind for some time:
Paul, when you're choreographing a piece, do you have in mind a particular dancer that you are writing for, or do you do it for how your body would look/feel and then adapt for the person who does it. Does being able to choreograph mean that you have like a 'memory' of how it looks and feels to perform a certain movement and sequence of movements, I mean (this is difficult to type and make any sense), do you actually feel the piece you are writing without having to actually perform it?
and second question - for anyone who knows - in Strictly Ballroom, when we first see Fran in the dance studio, she is putting something on the floor. ? soap flakes, salt, what is it, and why is she doing it. This must be something ballroom dancie.
thanks to those who have put together a great site.
Sharelle, north of Sydney.

Hello PC Friends,

Nertha-Bethany is doing fine-we are now trying to get her adjusted to her crib. She spent most of her time in the bassinette. She's beautiful...it looks like she has reddish blonde hair.

Millie-Hope you had a wonderful Easter-thanks for the email.

My soon to be 4 year old loves "Strictly Ballroom". When she plays with her dolls and Barbies-she sometimes pretends that one is named Tina Sparkle and one is named Fran. She even pronounces Fran with the accent-too cute!!

HUGS!

Sharelle,

PC Friends-let me know if I'm wrong but I believe what Fran is sprinkling on the floor is called "resin" which roughens up a slippery dance floor and helps the dancer to "stick" to the floor.

HUGS!
