I dont understand?
My daughter loves to watch a variety of programs on cable TV from Next Top Model, to Forensic Stories and the Plastic Surgery channel. It is all very interesting and at times gruisome. Especially on the plastic surgery shows where they show different proceedures such as face lifts etc where they actually show the face skin being peeled back off and over the skull so the surgeon can perform his work. The other day on an emergency room type hospital show they showed some poor bloke being brought into hospital with a nine inch hunting knife jammed to the hilt through his head! It was shocking to watch as they showed in full and frank detail the knife handle protruding from his head. They had close ups of him lying on a bed in the operating theatre and we could quite clearly see the wound, the blood, the knife..... not pretty but real. I am glad to say they saved him with not too much damage I think. So here is what I dont understand... There are a variety of shows that show graphic images that you would not normally see unless you were a doctor or surgeon or police officer or medical worker. These program are educational at times and are about providing, showing and informing the public about life, the body, our health etc BUT why when you watch a plastic surgery program about breast reduction or enlargement do they always blur out the nipple? Why in a crime program where they show people lying on a hospital trolley will they show the knife would or gun shot wound but if it is a woman lying there and she is topless why do they blur out the nipple? In this last example you may say they do it out of privacy concern for the victim - which may be true although they dont seem so concerned about showing the injuries etc I dont get it. You can watch a story about a breast reduction and they show before and after shots but you cant actually tell the difference or see the difference because of the big blurs they put over the nipple to protect us. What concerns me the most is the obvious fact that it is quite okay to see some pretty horrible injuries resulting from violence of one sort or another or some pretty amazing life saving surgery techniques etc but there seems to be something wrong, dirty or too confronting about seeing one particular part of the female human body - the nipple. Last word is that this is mostly for American TV shows - blood and guts is fine but no nipples!! Note: comments on old entries are closed. Please comment only on the current entry. Comments I remember on MTV about 5 years ago, they were doing a breast implant show and they did show everything. I found this so weird that this would be on MTV of all channels, where the median age has got to be about 18. Anyway, there they were showing her breats and the doctor was measuring them and touching them and all that kind of stuff. It truly shocked me only because I didn't expect to see it. And yet it seemed so more tame than all those hoochie hip hop or pop videos. haha Love ya, Censorship! Posted by: Sue on March 13, 2006 08:03 AMfrom IP: 69.44.226.221I agree with Sue, although some shows on cable like Nip/Tuck have already crossed the line and it's filtering into prime time as well. Maybe it's shock value, or no value, I have no idea. I only know that when my lovely friends from England came for a visit, they questioned why a show we were watching had the woman's breast blurred out. Seems nudity and cursing are a way of life on British telly and is taken for granted. Sally C. Posted by: Sally C. on March 13, 2006 06:32 PMfrom IP: 207.239.14.37HELLO PC FRIENDS, PAUL-I have wondered the same thing myself. In America-we seem to be so sexually repressed and yet we reek of sex-I don't get it! If you're gonna show the breast-show it all. Americans seem to be fascinated with the blood, gore, and violence. I agree with you. HUGS! In my mind and perception of different cultures, the US has a VERY strange relationship to "the body"!!! Esp. when there is sex, sexuality, nudity and/or violence involved -- it does not add up what it deems okay to be seen and by which audiences and what it does not. It makes no sense whatsoever!-well, to me anywey. It's a very strange relationship, one filled with lots of friction. Hey PC, I'm with Abeth...it makes no sense at all. A bit backwards in censorship. latte luv, I have watched some of these programs and have found them interesting. I too don't understand why they blot out nipples either. We have a channel here called Government Public Access. You can send in any kind of tape you want to have broadbast on the air. There were a couple of times I was channel surfing when I could not sleep, and low and behold my chin hit the floor. Usually after midnight you can see explesit(sp) acts, all naked and doing what should be left behind closed doors. It was discusting. There has been much outpooring of complaints and they are trying to get this smut off the air. I had some numbness last week and went into emergency. They ran some tests and found that I had had a stroke. I dodged the bullet though. They told me the spot was about as big as half a pencil erasure. So I dodged the bullet this time. The doctors have modified my meds and so I am back on track. I will be more careful with my health. By the way Paul, how is your blood pressure doing? Love to all HELLO PC FRIENDS, MARGE-Goodness, a stroke? It sounds like you've recovered well. I hope that your health continues to improve. Do take care. HUGS! Paul, I've seen this phenomenon many times over in US TV & film. Their censorship guidelines are at times different to Australia's. Why do they show such graphic detail in these shows? I'm of the opinion that they do it because that's why some people watch it. They talk about it and then others watch it. The greatest danger is that people are becoming increasingly de-sensitised to the damage and violence. I'm no prude (in fact I'm far from it), but these shows are crap, aimed at squeezing a cheap laugh out of a mostly adolescent audience. Peter Posted by: peter on March 15, 2006 03:22 AMfrom IP: 203.220.146.16I have thought about this covering up things. There are several programs that hide certain parts of peoples anatomy. There are several programs that hide peoples faces, due to arrest situations and other such procedures. It could be that the subject who is having breast implants etc. chooses not to reveal her nipples for thousands to see. There are reality TV shows such as "Trauma, Life in the ER" with situations of shootings, stabbings, car accidents where they cover up certain places. One such program we have here is called "Cheaters" It's on late Saturday night. It's focus is to catch husbands, wives, boyfriends, girfriends, and any other situaton whose partner is cheating. Its a hoot. Sometimes fights start. One woman threw all her boyfriends clothes out in the yard and set them on fire. One man they followed for his wife was caught in his car with the woman and he shot out of the car stark naked and was running around in the parking lot. He went into a laundromat and tried to find something to put on but to no avail. Of course they blocked out the lower part of his body. Here's another example for you. On professional wrestling, some of the wrestlers are smashed onto something hard. They carry a razor blade in their trunks and cut the upper part of their faces so that they will bleed. This segement is shown in BLACK & WHITE, so the RED blood doesn't show. What's the sense of that, with all the blood and gore being shown on some of these R rated action movies. ABETH - Thank you for your concerns about my stroke. I am doing fine. Take care PAUL Marge Posted by: marge on March 15, 2006 11:25 AMfrom IP: 4.178.51.240
I haven't been on for awhile and I thought I'd check in to see if Paul wrote another post. Why they don't show a woman's nipple? I'm not an expert on the media and popular culture but the only reason I can come up with is that they don't want to offend the conservatives. When we had the superbowl last year there was a big scandel about Janet Jackson showing her breast which was an accident in the first place and she got a lot of criticism for it. And then this year they cut the sound cord off the Rolling Stones over some lyrics that were suppose to be innapropriate. I mean what could the Rolling Stones possibly say that is so offensive compared to some booty video seen on MTV these days. Come on here! The people who are at the head of making these decisions on censurship really don't make any sense themselves. And when are the networks going to show more appealing shows than these plastic surgery Emergency Room grusume stuff! Why not a good romance, a mystery, or fantasy staring our Paul here! I want to escape when I but on the tellie not remind myself of reality. Take Care all, Julie and a shout out to Grand Dame Millie, Peter and Marge, Abeth, Evelyn and anyone else I forgot to mention. and of course the Big Kahoona and his family!
Marge, what a trooper you are!!! you make your stroke almost sound like a trivial matter. Take good care of yourself, okay? And best wishes to a full recovery and complete healthy state to you. Hi back to you Julie! I'm on a cleaning mission, getting rid of "clutter=stuff I don't want to have to move", thus preparing for my move that's still 3 1/2 months away. Last time I had to move, I had precicely 7 days to pack, move, unpack--all on jet lag. I guess I don't want to repeat that experience again. It feels darn good though to restore order into my life and to know (to a certain extent) what direction I'm moving into. Although, perhaps I should find a place to live first. I'm going down to St. Louis in about a month to investigate the rental market and the city of course. :-) Love to everyone, You're right Paul, and it's not just reality TV, it's movies too. As the beautiful Ewan McGregor once said: "It's alright to blow up 500, 000 people on screen, but oh no; I showed my penis." Posted by: Anna on March 16, 2006 02:33 PMfrom IP: 211.31.161.12Marge I am very glad to hear that you are doing well with your health. I certainly hope that the current recipe of meds that you are on do their thing and keep you healthy and on track! I dont really watch violent movies and certainly dont watch horror movies. I dont understand why people like to watch horror/slasher movies. Suspense is good in a thriller, creating mood, drama and tension through great script, great direction, great story and great acting is no easy thing. It is great to watch! I still prefer to be taken on a journey at the end of which I feel I have been somewhere worth while - that my time invested in watching the TV show or movie was well worth it and a positive experience. Sadly the people making movies/TV - well the majority perhaps - think making war not love is the way to go. Me? I would rather make love not war. Posted by: Paul on March 17, 2006 05:18 AMfrom IP: 220.239.99.13I love horror movies/sci-fi movies. I do not like the new ones coming out though. I can't think of one recently that really impressed me. I watched Cube Zero on demand a couple of weeks ago and loved that. (it was gory). I also watched Dary City, another great flick, very sci-fi. I enjoyed a couple of the master of horror shows that were on showtime. Some truely creeped me out. But for the most part I like campy shows. I love the sci-fi channel and I love old movies. HELLO PC FRIENDS, JULIE-Big hello to you, too! EVELYN-I hated moving and I've only done it once. Admittedly, it is a good way to get back to basics. Off the topic abit....this is the year that I've been learning how to take care of me. I had been feeling like for the past 7 years (since the birth of my first daughter) that I lost me somewhere. I have lost 15 pounds since the beginning of the year with my new lifestyle change. I have plenty of energy and motivation. "I feel good"(James Brown). Hope everyone is doing well and has a wonderful weekend! It's just all about archaic porn laws I think. It's annoying, just like most censorship. But I guess if the program is not on an adult channel, they have to follow the law...duh. I've been gone for a week or so. What a fanstastic couple of posts to come "home" to! I took the week off and did absolutely nothing. Very against my nature, but it was needed for medicinal reasons. Mental and physical. Nothing really wrong, just getting a bit of a pissy attitude at work and wanting to nurse the back injury, which was a success on both counts. I feel much better! :) Marge, glad to hear you are doing well. Continued good health to you. Hi to all you great people!
