So where have I been?

Busy. It is funny that when things are not going so well I have time to post about how they are not going so well. I also have the need to get the tough stuff off my chest so I can continue to cope and maintain a sense of hope. When things are pumping along you are just plain busy and although I don’t wish to appear to be successful and therefore ignoring you I am successfully achieving my goals and thus busy moving on and forward.

For those that have accompanied me on my journey thus far you know of the highs and lows and many of you have wished me success and good things. I thank you for that because right now - in fact over the past year in fact that which you have prayed for me has come about. I am busy! I am working. I am earning a living and I am happy. I have always tried to maintain happiness and generally succeeded but being happy in an unhappy environment is different to be happy in a happy environment - isn’t it? I am in a good place. I am the bamboo bending to the will of the wind, I am the leaf traveling along the course of the river, the feather being taken along the winds currents....you get the drift. I am going with the flow of the things that are coming my way - trying where I can to plant the seeds of tomorrows goals and working towards making the best of what I am being offered. I am grateful and thankful.

This year I have completed Dancing With The Stars in Australia and am currently doing DWTS in New Zealand. I have also become involved as a spokesperson for Flora Pro Active - a spread that helps reduce the amount of cholesterol the body absorbs. If you live in Australia you may have seen the ads on TV that started playing on Sunday night. It is a three month campaign with a total of 5 commercials. I am happy with the fact that the ads were made using my family -Andrea - my wife - and my three daughters are in the ads and do a great job. It was such a blast to make the commercials with them as they got to see what it is I have so often done between leaving home and getting back again and it was great to take them on that journey into TV land and see their joy in it and the final product. I am a very proud husband and father!

The Food Trial my show about food and produce in Victoria received very good response so much so that channel seven put the show back on air one month after it had finished airing. It again won the ratings on it's various showings which is great. They at channel seven are wanting us to do more shows which I believe will eventually happen and hopefully sooner rather than later. The truth is things don’t seem to happen quickly in TV land nor do they always make sense in the way they happen so one must believe and work towards them happening. All good things.... We currently have the outlines for 26 episodes traveling from Tasmania up the east coast to the tip of Queensland - so with luck it will get up and running sooner rather than later and be shown nationally across Australia. No doubt it will eventually find its way to the various food networks and channels in the US, England and other countries!!

So work is good! DWTS looks fairly certain to happen again in Sept this year and I think the possibility of it going again next year is high as is the possibility of it happening again in New Zealand next year. If that is so then I am in good shape work wise next year - I can pay the school fees, buy food and pay the mortgage - to know this in advance is such a.... I was going to say miracle but it is just such a relief. Mind you none of it is certain but some things are more certain than others so we will see how it pans out. If it doesn’t pan out I have to say it has just been great that I have had a year where I knew things were going to happen and I knew I and the family was safe - that has meant a lot to me and to Andrea. We would love it to continue on for a fair while and are working towards that. The Food Trail is unknown at present but again I feel fairly confident that it will happen and hope that it is ongoing over a number of years and continents. It is the sort of show that has that kind of potential!!! I must get Cat a copy so she can put at least one episode on to the site for you guys to see!

As for home life things are great! Busy with the girls going to a new school and the in's and out's of that and having teenage daughters - albeit angelic ones! It is great to not have to stress about not having any income and therefore no money and not to stress or fight about why the girls need a new pair of school shoes etc Mind you fiscal responsibility is always lurking in the background as one never knows what tomorrow will bring - although I feel I have a realistic idea.

The girls are great. Elise is still struggling with chronic fatigue, I was hoping that she would be further on the mend than she is but it is one of those diseases that take time to heal and you cannot rush it. It has been a very hard road for her as she would rather be a vibrant teenager doing all those things vibrant teenagers do including be able to attend to her school work. People often think if you have chronic fatigue you are a bit tired and trying harder is all you need to do - wrong!!! It is a disease that people don’t understand and that makes it all the harder to personally deal with it. I am proud of Elise in the way she is dealing with it.

Vibrant also is a great way to describe Emily. She has embraced her new school wonderfully and her life in general. Geez they grow up fast! Emily is almost as tall as me and Erin is getting there also and becoming her own woman!! Elise is 17 in 4 months a fact that shocks me as I type. I am having trouble letting her go! I don’t want her to be that old yet nor any of them to tell the truth. Yes it all gets better but in some ways the idea of them leaving home gets closer and that thought is not one I wish to dwell on. They are great people and I am lucky to have them.

I am also lucky to have my wife. We continue to grow and enjoy each others company. We have taken to walking together over the last few months. It is better than going to the gym together because when we walk we can talk about things. We often walk for about 45 mins to a coffee shop and have a coffee and then walk home - I miss those walks when I am away.. I still walk but on my own I tend to talk to myself which often attracts some odds looks from passers by!

I have run out of steam now. I am on a plane going back to Melbourne after shooting DWTS in New Zealand and I think I may relax with a beer and read my book. I am looking forward to getting home and seeing the kids. It is always chaotic as all three bombard me with what has been going on whilst I have been away and Andrea whom hasn’t spoken to many adults while I am gone has lots to say also......girls do know how to talk! It is a lovely if deafening chaos! Andrea is cooking me a lovely roast and I will get a cuddle from all of them! Indeed I am lucky.

On that note I will sign off on this update. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers over the years - they seem to be working! I wonder where the journey is taking me now?

Paul,

Your post appears to genuinely reflect what life is about, the good, the great, the bad and the downright struggle at times, and you sound the happiest that I can remember.
Congratulations for that.

Best wishes for a continuation of good things.
Good luck to you.

I sincerely hope that Elise finds some relief from her suffering. No child deserves that.

Wow!

That post was so touching and I am so happy for you, even though I don't know you as such -or at all even! ( i am a newbie as i have figured out they are called, but have read many posts and comments - spent minutes last night laughing over that chicken crossing the road joke)

As for chronic fatigue syndrome, my cousin had it a few years ago and found that acupuncture helps?

It would be brilliant if you could eventually get the Food Trail to Scotland, but no haggis please! (although i wonder if you can get halal haggis - now that's a thought...)

With the whole children getting older thing, I turned 20 last month and my mother nearly had a heart attack! I am her youngest, so all of her kids have officially all grown up, but still live at home so is not so bad for her. I think my gran in Pakistan still thinks I'm about 14 though!

All the best,
love and prayers to all,
Take care xxx

How wonderful to see your very long post, Paul, and to feel your happiness with your life at this point in time just flow across the miles!

I have been here for some time now, mostly lurking, but I do remember all your ups and downs, hopes and dreams. It is heartwarming to see that good things do come to good people, especially to the very ones so deserving of it.

Congratulations on snagging your commercials with the family. How awesome is that? It'd be fun to see it here, if our wonderful Cat can get one to put up.

Kids do grow up fast, don't they? It's hard to let go as a parent, let them leave the nest and watch them soar. Then, one day you just sit back and look at them and your heart bursts with pride at the loving people they've become. What a great legacy to leave behind.

Hopefully, we'll get to see Food Trail here in the States. I watch Kylie Kwong religiously on our food channel and would love to see you.

Continued success, Paul, and thanks for the great update.

Big hello to those I've neglected recently, especially my lovely Peter and Grandma Mil, sweet Mary across the pond, old friends and new.

Be well.

Dearest Paul,

At last you were literally "flying high" and by the excitement of your post, your diversified career has taken off successfully, and it boggles the mind just to read about it!

How happy we are for you, and wish we could turn on our TV and see you in action, along with your family! (We'll have to depend on our Aussie friends here on PC to keep us informed!)

I predict that your Food Show will be a big winner here in the states! I daily watch "The Food Network" and the people that appear on it already have written huge cookbooks which are being literally "eaten up" by the public here in the bookstores.

Since watching the Food Network on cable, I have bought a chopping and slicing knife, a Cusinart
indoor grilling machine (I love it, so does Ellie) and have learned to use more pepper...I really have added more spice to our life.)

Keep us informed, and best wishes for your continued success. You weathered the past storms with style and grace, and although your plane has landed, your career is flying!

Shalom and Love,

Gran Mil

What can I say Paul?! You've done so well, you deserve every success. Glad to hear DWTS NZ has gone very well. I'm sure you would be a hit on the English version, Strictly Come Dancing. On the subject of dancing, I'm trying to learn the Rumba at the moment, (not very successfully, I might add!), do you have any tips on how to remember the steps?

Congrats on the Flora Pro - Active campaign too, we get this over here in the UK, my Mum, who also suffers from High Blood Pressure, drinks the yoghurt drink things for the Blood Pressure.

I hope your daughter, Elise, feels better soon, (we share the same name, well not quite, mine is my middle name and it's spelt with a 'Y')

I love your words about the willow bending to the breeze and things.

Lots of Love.

While I've only come on this site right before your birthday, I find the way you share your thoughts is genuine and it's great to see a man not afraid to speak out (even if he talks to himself as he walks!). It's also great to see the love you have for your wife and kids.

I don't have to tell you (especially you!!) that when we dance from the heart we have a better chance of succeeding--it's obvious your heart is right in the center of all you do and the foundation of your good family.

I see my niece and nephew, who are into their teens, and can't imagine that they're appoaching that time where they'll be embarking their lives. I also hope they make better decisions than I, but I think they are in better positions to. If only we can get them to stop trying to grow up faster than they need to!

Hope your show makes it to the States one of these days.

Bravo!

Paul,

As always, you are such an inspiration. We will all eventually prevail, if we have good hearts and souls, as you appear to have. You have continued to persevere, even when it was very difficult for you.

This forum of support and friendship is hopefully responsible for part of your growth. I know it has helped me greatly.

Sometimes, "strangers" are easier to confide in, and to give and receive with. I found this here also.

Please don't forget to come back and keep us up with everything going on in your life. We would miss you terribly if you went away for too long.

I couldn't be happier for your string of recent successes. You certainly have earned it! Keep showing the world who you are. We feel especially lucky to "know" you as we do!

Congratulations to you and your family. I sure hope your daughter is feeling like herself very soon. That is so debilitating. I'm sure the love and support of her family makes it more manageable. She is blessed, but let's hope she's bouncing all over the place very soon.

Keeping you and yours in my thoughts. I'm sure this is a very good time in your life! Right on!

Love to all of you.

I've missed you and glad to see you've posted. I had a feeling you would soon since it was close to the end of the month and you post at least once a month to let us know how you are (thank you for that). I’m glad you are so happy and that you're family is doing well and got to share the limelight with you a bit (I'm sure it must have been a blast for your girls). I talk to myself too, under my breath and quietly and snicker at people when they are not looking a lot (but in fun not to be mean). It's fun to be a little different. Please try to get one of those episodes so we (in the states) can see what you love to do while doing it while being yourself. That would be such a treat, a real joy and pleasure :) Your walks with Andrea sound like a very nice way to spend time with the one that you love and share your life with. I'm a spinster (I'm going to be 40 here in a couple of weeks and I have wakened to that) but instead of being ashamed of it I want to get a cute t-shirt and it spelled out in front in a bunch of purple silver and royal blue glitter. Haha!
Lots of love,

Paul I like this quote and thinks it fits you perfectlY!

Happy are they who live in the dream of their own existence, and see all things in the light of their own minds; who walk by faith and hope; to whom the guiding star of their youth still shines from afar, and into whom the spirit of the world has not entered! They have not been "hurt by the archers", nor has the iron entered their souls. The world has no hand on them.

Paul, I am so happy for you. It was such a joy to read your post and to hear that good things continue to come your way.

From the first day I came to this place, I have always sensed a trust and a belief among all the people here, that some day, all the good that you have put out into the Universe would have to come back to you. And that's what it feels like tonight. Long may these good times last!

Sally, it was a lovely surprise to see your post! I hope all is well with you and that life is being good to you.

Peter, it was lovely to see you too. My best to you as always.

Hello to all my lovely friends here and welcome to all the new faces.

Love to all,

Paul,

It's absolutely GREAT to hear you're so busy you can't get here very often. It's good to be that full. Add that you love what you're doing, and you seem to be on a true top of the mountain. May there never be a downslope.

Tea, what a lovely quote. I can only remember hearing part of it before, in Anne of Green Gables, when whe rebuffs Gilbert (for the hundredth time), saying "the iron has entered my soul!" I figured she was quoting something.

Hope everybody is enjoying the springtime weather. See y'all round.

[Weird I posted that after my first post (which didn’t make it) I got an error about the gateway ( which = I believe the potholes that come up time to time on the internet highway). ]

Paul, I just wanted to say that I am so glad to see your post. I have missed you. You’re such a sweetheart and your words (even when you’ve been down) are so strongly stated they are always so full of heart and naturally are very touching.
Since it was almost end of the month I was hoping for a post soon and yay! here it is 
You’re happy and working and in good spirits. What more could you ask for? How wonderful to hear! I am so happy to hear all your good news and terrific doings. I know it’s the way it’s going to be from here on. You are just too sweet, special and good hearted (and cute) for things not to work out in your favor.
And pretty pretty pretty please get an episode of food trail to this site so we can see you doing what you love :) I bet I'm not alone when I say I would love to see the ad of you and your family too if that could be managed.
Love, Tea

Dear Paul,
It is admirable that you have managed to keep your eyes firmly fixed on your goals, even as they evolved, through the highs and lows you have experienced. Many who live through attaining fame, at the level you have, spend the rest of their existences trying to retain or recapture those phantoms of celebrity. They trade the joy of the continuing journey for their illusion of the destination. To some lesser extent, we all have to endure the Masters Program at the L'Ecole Aux Dur Frappe (The School of Hard Knocks!). Experience roughs us up a bit to hone our hard edges and forces us simultaneously to be more pliant and resilient. In spite of your trials, your infectious enthusiasm for the trek, wherever it leads you, remains an irresistible call to those of us standing on our own personal crossroad. A very wise man once wrote me that “living life with a passion was really the only way to live”. Oh wait… that was YOU!

The Food Trail will definitely be picked up. The recipes are fantastic! Keep busy, if you must, but don’t forget to write!

Warmest Regards to you and yours,
Diane

P.S. I have a daughter a bit older than Elise. You and Andrea can take comfort in the little poem I recite every time the thought of her being so grown and moving toward her own goals brings a tear to my eye…

“A son’s a son, till he takes a wife
But a daughter’s a daughter, all of her life.” Unknown

Dear Diane,

Happy Birthday to you! I found that after a certain amount of years, there is no room for candles at all, and one may revert back to one one VERY large single candle!

By the way, we have another Diane on PC, so perhaps you could identify yourself with a middle initial, or with the name of the state where you live. Just a suggestion!

Hello everyone!
Paul, it is exciting to read about all the things that are happening in your life. I'm very happy for you! and I totally can relate to your enjoyment of being happy in happy circumstances as opposed to difficult ones. It's mind-boggling and re-energizing on so many levels!

For a change I'm blissfully happy, exhausted and busy, but happy! My sister is visiting from Germany (yeah!), we are going on a vacation for 10 days to several US national parks in the west on Monday, and I'm packing and organizing my move to MO, I can't believe I'm going to be living somewhere else in 3 1/2 weeks, and then there are the farewell parties--my students threw me TWO different parties, they are such amazing people, I wish I could steal them away and make them come with me :-) That would be such a funny payback for all the crap I got at my current institution, not that I'm really looking for payback ...

Hope you are enjoying life to the fullest!

A week or so back, it had just come to me how successful your life has turned around. With your beer brewing, DWTS, your other endeavors.
I think I started with this site about the time your daughter just turned 14 and you were in Vancouver BC. Because you could not be with her for her birthday, you wrote her a poem. It was beautiful!

I have been with you in all your ups and downs and I finally can see how upbeat you are in your life's journey.

I am so happy that you and your family are getting into new adventures.

I just viewed your commercial. It's great!

Take care and love to all,

Happy birthday Diane and thank you for your thoughts. I am glad you gave us a little bit of history as Grand Ma Mil said we have another Diane that we havent heard from in a while but I wasnt sure if you were she at first. Any way thanks for being a part of the site and hope you had a great birthday and that all your wishes come true - be careful what you wish for though!

Evelyn - watch out for the beers.... I mean bears! have a great break with your sister I am sure you will have heaps of fun - it is great to be able to holiday with your family. I havent seen my brother for ages but spoke to him on the phone for the first time in a month or two. It would be good to just go away together for a few days.... good to be able to do the same with my other brother but.... so enjoy!

Marge stick with me as I am sure there will be plenty of journeying up and down - I would mostly if not totally prefer the up.

Grand Ma Mil big kiss and a hug to you!

Tea loved the poem thanks.

Abeth hope all is well with you and yours!

I look at your commercial every day. I didn't recognise you at first. You have 'matured' very well. I hope we can see more. What's the dogs name? You are very lucky to have your beautiful girls by your side. They are all so beautiful. I hope that Elise get back to good health soon. She is in my prayers.
I hope that isn't your kitchen. It's too small for your large family.

On a sad note; My cousin left this last Friday for two weeks in Hawaii. On Saturday, she fell and broke her leg. It's her left thigh and the brake goes right down into the knee. Needless to say she came back home on Saturday. Because of the three day holiday, the doctors can't see her until Wednesday afternoon. What a way to start a vacation!

We are having a beautiful sunny day here and I am going to get out and work in the yard. A person's yard is always a work in progress.

Take care and love to all,

HELLO PC FRIENDS,

In keeping with the topic "Where Have I Been?"....I was just attending my oldest daughter's honor roll breakfast. She made honor roll the entire year! I'm so proud of her!!! I can stop holding my breath. She was premature and the doctors told us that they weren't sure if she would have any learning disabilities-this proves that she doesn't. Plus, I wanted to brag just a little bit.

Hope all are well here at The Corner.

Hey Paul,

Oh my goodness, I'm glad to see that you're doing so well! I've kept up with your exploits these past few years and I've been excited that you've been doing such wonderful things. I'm sure you don't remember me but I used to post on here a few years ago (you'd respond too and you were so sweet!) and I really enjoyed reading your blogs, they're very eloquent and free-flowing. Lo and behold, here's the point of my post. I receive these postcards from a comedy club in New Brunswick, NJ and though I haven't been there in several years, I keep receiving them. I usually don't even take a peek at them anymore but today I decided to take a look to see if there was anybody performing that I knew of. I think I saw your name and picture but I'm not sure if it's you, or some other Paul Mercurio. Please let me know if it's you, I've already made reservations for all 3 nights (I just realized now that my birthday party in NY is on the 3rd night and I'll have to cancel that one) without even know if it was really you. I've wanted to meet you so desperately all these years but everything always seemed to be happening in LA or in Australia, neither of which I'm close to. I'm so excited!!! Cancel those reservations. There's a NY comedian named Paul Mercurio.

Oh my goodness. Even before I saw your post, Cat, I took a look at the website, WRONG Paul Mercurio. Darn it! Here's the kicker, the post card they sent out? It has OUR Paul's picture, not Paul Mercurio the comedian. The website has the correct picture. :( So sad now. Ah well, perhaps in the future. I knew I couldn't possibly get that lucky. If anyone's interested, I'll get a scan of the postcard with the wrong picture. The website is www.stressfactory.com. Hope it gave you a laugh though, Paul. :)

Noticed another thing. Not only does it have the wrong picture, it has the wrong name, the comedian's name is Paul Mecurio, not Paul Mercurio. Oy, it keeps getting better and better. :)

I would love to see a scan of that postcard.

I think the comedian's actual name is Mercurio, but he's had to change it on the official website, and possible in his Screen Actors Guild registration, to Mecurio. There is obviously good reason why two entertainers shouldn't use the same name!

My picture?? How funny! Although that is also false advertising. Love to see what the picture is.

Good to hear from you again Tiffany! And sorry It is not me - if you do go to the show let us know if he is any good!
