The Bicentenary had demanded much of Murphy - Vast, overseas touring by the SDC to London and New York, and finally, Kraanerg.
That massive milestone - to the music of Xenakis - had been such a breakthrough for Murphy, it gave him the freedom to take his year's sabbatical without guilt. "I had to develop a new vocabulary to handle that music - which is great, because I've found myself referring to it all this year. Kraanerg also gave me the courage to decide I'd done enough 'educating' audiences - and that allowed me to do away with any facile surface for Soft Bruising. .
