I caught your show at the Funny Bone in Columbus. Great show, very fun!
Also, I heard you were opening for Jon Stewart's Midterm Midtacular, you must be okay if you associate with a good guy like that.

[Editor's note: Wrong Paul. You're thinking of Paul Mecurio, a NYC comic. Paul MeRcurio is an Australian actor.]

Hey Paul, I hope you read my last post and this one cause I've got a great pc game for you. It's called need for speed hot pursuit III. It's a car racing game that's a lot of fun and it's like dancing the paso doble and the Viennese Waltz at Jive speed. You'll love it!.

Brenda (email) on 24 August, 2006

Hello Paul, I'm a student at New Zealand and we're studying your film 'strictly ballroom'. It is fantastic movie and your a great dancer! You've actually got me interested in ballroom dancing because i do hip hop but i'm thinking of changing!
Well got to go. If you have time please please e-mail me back or something. Just one reply please, thankyou.
ps: i think you should teach your daughters dancing, i bet they'll become world champs.bibi

Lauren Porch (email) on 20 August, 2006

Hi Paul,

I came across your film strictly ballroom the other day and I just had to tell you that you are absolutely gorgeous. I have played the film over and over again. I just cant stop watching it and my partner is getting rather fed up with losing me to watch it hahaha. I did ballroom & latin american dance classes with my friend but gave it up due to commitments, but watching your film has made me want to do it again. Although I know that I will be dissapointed not to get a partner as great as you. Do you still dance for fun or anything? It's a shame you're not planning another dancing movie, but I do understand that you've got to move on! Hope everything is good with you and you family are doing well!

Thankyou for your film (its a good job its on dvd and not vhs otherwise it'd be worn thin by now!) By the way when I bought it, I thought it was a new film hehehe silly me! should have known by John Hannan's hairdo hehe.

One last thing...I know you get this an awful lot as I've read most of this guestbook now....but you are sexy as hell, and THE most amazing, sensual & sexy man I've ever had the pleasure of coming across.

Take care love Lauren x x x x

P.S. I've been writing this whilst listening to 'scott & frans paso doble', it sends shivers up my spine everytime I think of you and Tara Morice doing the paso doble on screen (both practicing with her grandmother and father, and the final sequence!!) Anyway I'm going now big kisses to you sexy man!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Lorna Mills (email) on 14 August, 2006

SORRY! I know this is my third e-mail so I promis to make it my last! I just really wanted to say that Strictly Ballroom has become more than just a good film for me. I couldn't sleep last night and put the film on again. (I think it's Paul's amazing smile that keeps drawing me back,it melts my heart. oh dear I think I'm in love!)I'v got the collector's DVD and in an interview at the end, Pauls says that he hopes that people feel like they have been on a journey after watching it and it really is like that for me. I think that a film can have a meaning to a particular person at a particular time in their life and at the moment I'm a bit blue and lonely as i've just moved to a new area and don't know anybody, so I'm going to join some dance classes. Paul and Tara make it look so magical I find myself a bit tearfull at the scenes where they are practising the new steps it is so beautifully done, and Paul's Pacadoble (excuse my spelling) in the final scene is the sexiest thing i'v ever seen! Watching Paul dance mesmorises me and he comes across as a very warm and special person. I hope that Paul does read this page to see what an impact he has made to so many people across the globe. So thank you Paul, your dancing, your acting and your smile has made me very happy. You're lovely. xxx

Lorna Mills (email) on 13 August, 2006

Hello, it's me again and I think I really am addidcted to watching the film because I managed to watch it twice last night and then re-played all my favorite scenes again (all of them with paul dancing) not only because I find you absolutely gorgeous and love watching your dancing but also because you act the part so very well and all the emotions are expresses so wonderfully in your face and eyes and that makes it such a tender and enjoyable film. Like Chris (11th Aug) said, it is just beautiful.

Becky (email) on 13 August, 2006

Paul,I just wanna say that I love you.You have inspired me so much over the years through, not only your dancing but also your acting. It's so dramatic and so powerful that I feel like I'm part of the story and I feel like I'm in the room with you. I keep getting shivers down my spine everytime I see you dance it's so exciting and words just can't descibe the way you use your eyes to reflect your feelings and the mood of the music you are dancing to. Hope to see you again on DTWS cause I love the show and I love the way you give your comments. It's like your acting them out when your not.Anyway I hope to see you soon.Love to you and your family.
Becky.

Lorna Mills (email) on 11 August, 2006

I'm addicted to watchin Stricktly Ballroom and as I am unattached at the moment, I take great pleasure in rewinding all the scenes of Scott in his tight white vest! p.s I live in England so shall I ever see Paul over here?

Chris (email) on 11 August, 2006

I'd just like to add how much I have enjoyed watching Strictly Ballroom. It is so exhuberant and uplifting. I find something new in it each time I see it...but it is the dancing that creates the strongest emotional response in me. It is just beautiful.

Jeong (email) on 9 August, 2006

From South Korea^_^:
Your character in the movie 'Strictly Ballroom' gave me hope, new energy to start again. Recently, I am at the hardest time in my life. I felt that I cannot do anything. Maybe I have lived my life in fear. If you have any experience of overcoming the hardships in your life, ...can you tell me the story?^_^

Paul,

It is nice to meet you! I have just viewed the Story of Joseph of which you played one of the leading roles.

I have seen this film several times. I never tire of seeing it.

It is shown on the TBN network.

You were very good in the role of Joseph!

Joseph happens to be one of my favorite personages in the Bible.

I hope you have a strong living faith in the Lord!

The Lord bless you paul and your family!

Blessings,
KC

Hi Paul, How are you and how's your sister? I you are both ok. Give your sister my regards.Just one question, are you planning on doing another movie? Cause I love your acting skills and it would be great if you did another movie, espcialy a dancing movie. I love your dancing is so good and Strctly Ballroom (what I've seen of it) you see I haven't seen it all and I'm kicking myself and I what it to come on tv again so I can see it all. As I was saying about strictly ballroom, You were brilliant in that movie, but the only thing was I thought you were John paul young abd you did look at bit like him too. But I was only seven when that movie was on tv. Now I'm 21 and I still love that movie and I can tell it's you. I can't wait for series 5 of dwts, I love the show and I haven't missed a series yet it's so good that I just can't miss it. And that famous strip that tom willams did in series two for his freestyle it was my 20th birthday that day and it was the best birthday ever and I'll never forget it. (Just don't tell Helen Richey because she would be jelous)
You get better soon. Love ya!
Becky.

Melody (email) on 4 August, 2006

Paul, sorry about that double entry. It didn't look like the original saved, so I tried to recreate it.

Glad you did well on the challenge. Hope you're over that flu!

Paul (email) on 3 August, 2006

Caroline, I posted a reply to your first message here so maybe you missed it, if you scroll down far enough you will find it. Yes I do remember you and those days at Curtain and it certainly does feel a fair way in the past! Hope you are well and enjoying life.

Becky I didnt play anything in the movie cars.

Melody I dropped my cholesterol by 16%! Amazing stuff and easy as pie to do - well actually you chouldnt eat pie on the challenge to much saturated fat!!

Joyce, sadly there is not really very much of me out on DVD from my dance days. You could contact Sydney Dance Company and ask them about any videos they may have for sale or enquire with the ABC for any videos of Sydney Dance Company.

Just watched Strictly Ballroom...it was great!!! Paul...you must have the cutest smile ever xxx

Christelle (email) on 21 July, 2006

I just recently watched strictly ballroom. I am a bit late, I know. Your sincerity really came through. I think that is why the movie stuck with me so much besides the obvious benefit of watching you dance. Your joy and passion for dance and my guess as a person seems to just shine through. Though I am a bit late I am a fan now and I was glad to find your site.Do you still dance or focus on choreography, or mostly other stuff now? Best of luck to you and your family and success in all you do and hope you will come to US again. Peach beer sounds great :)

becky (email) on 20 July, 2006

Hey Paul,Congrats on the good results you got for your flors pro-activ spread calestorol challenge. Could you tell me what part you played in the movie cars? I'd love to know.

Dear Paul,

I really like you. I´m from Brazil- São Paulo (south of Brazil) and could know you at the film Strictly Ballroom.
I was a shy girl and I had shame to dance.
Now I´m an economist and started learning to dance Salsa. I intend to do a Ballroom course but as soon as I have time.
I wish you all the best for your life and your family. The Brazilian people will appreciate you a lot if you can came in São Paulo (for your curiosity São Paulo is like Toronto - the structure what I mean. It is the financial district of Brazil and the best universities are in São Paulo. And one day (perhaps) I would have an honor to dance at least only one song with you, the master of the Ballroom.
Success forever for you and best regards,
Daniela Bandelli

Rebel (email) on 6 July, 2006

The dancing is more than I can say...I wished it had of been me instead of Fran who got to dance with him.

Rebel (email) on 6 July, 2006

The only thing I can say is that is dancing makes me want to move and how beautiful is body positioning is.

Becky (email) on 5 July, 2006

Hey Paul Just wondering how you went with your Flora Pro- acitve colestorol challenge. I've seen three of your adds and the're pretty good. Hope you did really well.
Can't wait to see you on D.w.t.s again.

``People just don't believe it when I tell them but I've never been a fan of ballroom. I fully understand its appeal to other people but it's never been the style of dancing I personally enjoy--can't stand it actually,'' Mercurio says with a smile.

Nice to know someone else doesn't really enjoy this danceform. I was reading the articles on the site and caught this quote.

So how do you handle the dancing on "Dancing with the Stars?" ;)

One of my flamenco colleagues competes and told me about her new Latin teacher that I should take from . . . while she does well in competition, I think I'll keep stomping the floor. Have some summer festivals we need to rehearse for and teaching through the summer--can't take on much more and do it well.

This weekend is Father's Day in the States. I'm sure your family knows they have a gem in you!

Hi Paul
Hope you're well.

At times I feel like I run out of things to say here.

As I've said before your dancing is wonderful, (I've taken up dance to as I said before!) your poetry has the power to lift even the saddest of spirits.
Although I've not been on here very long in a way I feel like I've found friends, your comments do make me smile when I feel sad and scared. You make me realise that no matter what someone's always there.

Good luck and lots of love to you and your family. Stay happy.

Love Clair. XXX

Flower

Pretty flower, so I see
Pretty blossom, on that tree
Does it matter? so you say
What pretty flower blows this way?

Pretty rainbow, in the sky
Will I ever, fly so high
Pretty raindrops, in yout hair
Forever falling - but you're not there

Pretty shadows, all around
Pretty patterns, on the ground
Pretty, no,
Beautiful flower, in your hand
Why's it never clear to me?
When you're not here, here to see
Pretty blossoms on our tree
Why's it always look so bland
You're not here to hold my hand
And will I ever learn to land?

Hi Paul,
What a pleasure it was to find your web site! I have been a fan of yours for years. It started with Strictly Ballroom, like so many people. Then, a few years ago, I stumbled upon Joseph. I can't tell you how much I love this film. My family and I watch it at our Christmas AND Channuka gatherings (yes, I'm half of each.) I have to say, it is some of the finest acting I have ever seen! You were so sincere and natural in your role, and I really learned about the story of Joseph. It is a beautiful preformance, and you touched my heart. I just wanted to say thank you! I wish you would do more films for us to enjoy. You are a wonderful actor and dancer. I can't believe I missed you on Dancing With The Stars! I'm not much a TV watcher, so I had no idea you were a judge. Well, thanks again Paul for your contribution to the world of art. I'm happy there is a place where I can stay updated about your career.

Or does it not have to be taken that way? Anyway, not many people think like that and it's really refreshing and sort of comforting to read someone who does. Best regards!

Hi Paul

First congratulation to your birthday in delay! After watching "Strictly ballroom" for another time (we really enjoy it every time) I was getting to your homepage. There I read about your decision to stay in Australia indstead of taking your family to the States. Congratulation for setting these priorities. There are times we have to make decisions for the benefit of people we love. I wish you a life full of fullfillment in what you are doing.
Greetings Christina
P.S. you were great also as Joseph

Paul (email) on 25 April, 2006

Gidday All. Thank you for my birthday wishes and for your kind words regards my work! The Food Trail is not on DVD as yet but I do hope that it will be in the not too distant future. I am also hoping to include more of the cooking on the DVD so after each episode you can get a more indepth look of preparing the dishes.

The show is back on channel seven from this coming Sat. The ratings were so good that channel seven decided to put the same 6 episodes to air straight away. we are working on gettng the next series up as soon as we can.

So glad that everything's going so well.
Wish I could see you on Dancing with the Stars but unfortunately we don't get it over here. :(
Would love to see you on our version Strictly Come Dancing.
I love your poetry, it always cheers me up when I've had a bad day.
As I've said before I love Strictly Ballroom, I'm hoping to get a hold of Kick next.
You seem a lovely, genuine person.
Best of Luck.

Happy birthday to you!!!
I want you to have a wonderful time there. God bless you!!!

Jade (email) on 31 March, 2006

Hi Paul! First of all, I wanted to wish you Happy 43rd Birthday! I hope you enjoy every moment... and eat lots of cake! :)
Second, I hate to admit... but I'm a newbie. I just recently learned about "Strictly Ballroom." I was talking to one of my math professors about how I wanted to start taking ballroom dancing lessons, and he thought I'd be interested in "Strictly Ballroom," so he lent it to me on the last day before Spring Break (which was March 18-26). I didn't start watching it until Sunday, March 19, but I absolutely loved it! I watched it 13 times within 8 days. (3 times on Sunday, 3 times on Monday, 1 time on Tuesday, 2 times on Wednesday, 1 time on Thursday, 1 time on Friday, 1 time on Saturday, and 1 time on Sunday!) That doesn't even include the multiple times that I watched chapters 3-5 and 7. I put those on repeat. The dancing was incredible! I really want to learn how to do the rumba now! Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I loved the movie... all 13 times that I watched it! Unfortunately, school has recommenced so the number of times that I can watch "Strictly Ballroom" has decreased quite a bit (especially at the rate of 13/8 times/day), but there are always the weekends! :)
Ooh... I'm not sure if you would know this or who I could ask, but on the DVD there is the "Love is in the Air (Scott and Fran)" segment in the Design Gallery section. I really love the song (instrumental/piano) that's playing in the background. Do you know what song that is, or how I could find out? Would Baz Luhrmann know? I would watch that clip over and over... both for the pictures and for the song! :)
Well, I'm sure my message is long enough... Again, Happy Birthday! I really loved "Strictly Ballroom"... I can't wait until the next time I get to watch it... today? :) Also, I want to thank you for reviving my interest in dancing (primarily ballroom dancing)! You're quite an inspiration!
With much appreciation,
Jade.

Happy Birthday Paul, Wishing you all the best in the future! From your fans in Canada

Melody (email) on 30 March, 2006

Paul, one thing we have in common, we have both worked with Antonio Vargas!
I enjoyed your work in Strictly Ballroom which I saw when it first came through Chicago. I almost didn't as I'm not a ballroom fan, but a colleague told me about its connection with flamenco, so I gave it a chance. Your dancing was excellent, and your "listen to the rhythm" lesson is something I suggest my own students watch and watch again if they rent the movie.
I just received the anniversary DVD as a gift (from my students) and did a search on you to read more about your background.
I teach/perform Spanish Dance in Chicago and became acquainted with Antonio when he came in for a workshop a few years ago. After my 25+ year journey of flamenco dance, his material was refreshing. (It also threw me to hear him talk with a British accent after hearing the gruff Gypsy Spanish in "SB".)
You're an excellent dancer--congratulations on a great (and varied) career!

Denise from Minnesota (email) on 28 March, 2006

Paul, I ma a big fan of yours. My son was just in Melbourne at Christmas time and is just starting a hobby of beer brewing. Is your beer on the market in Australia? I should have had him look for a bottle or two to bring home. Anyway, I enjoy reading your blog and wish you success in everything you do. (Secretly, I wish they would air your food show and your Dancing with the Stars over here in the U.S. -heehee)

Paul (email) on 25 March, 2006

heat oil in a pan and then add garlic and chilli - when hot amnd cooked a little ad the chestnuts and roast tossing through the oil, add salt to taste cook a little longer and serve. It is a very easy throw together dish that I am sure you will conquer with a minimum of experimentation

jan (email) on 25 March, 2006

Paul,
Loved your Episode 5 Food Trail program from Villa Gusto with chestnut recipes as I have lots of chestnuts, but I forgot to write down the recipes. The soup recipe is on your web site but not the one that was the stir frying of chestnuts. Please provide the chestnut recipe done in the pan.

thanks

Tania - jeez I think we did boxes around 1984??? Which would have made me around 21. No - I just did a search on Sydney Dance Company Boxes and it said the work premiered in 1985.

Lik wid, either you aare doing some smart advertising or you think I was at the Cat and The Fiddle last Friday - well it wasnt me as I live in Melbourne and was definately at home on Friday. Cool website by the way.

Caroline - gidday! Wow - hope you are well and living the life you dreamed of. Joseph is back in Perth teaching Lighting design and has two kids now! Micheal sadly died about 6 years ago and is sorely missed. Mum is still there and Connie is in the usa. What about you?

Hey Paul,
I can say i'm a self-confessed Dancing With the Stars addict, and not for the stars. For Two of the Judges - who may i say have aged gracefully through their years - and of course have starred opposite each other in the one Movie that has been in my DVD player for weeks sometimes months on end! So every Tuesday night, at 7:30pm on channel 7, here in Australia Dancing with the Stars is on and i keep watching it just to see 'that' smile. Strictly ballroom is THE best movie i've ever seen. I can't stop watching it, once again just to see THAT smile!

Dear Paul,

I just bought the Strictly Ballroom DVD which I had never had the chance to see before and was so struck by it that I think it has actually become my favorite movie of all time...beating out even Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany's and Funny Face. To me, that's a big deal. I don't think I've ever seen anything so sweet and romantic and inspiring as well. Your movie also knocked out my other favorite dance movie from its spot (Center Stage). Like someone else on one of these posts, I too will be taking ballroom dance lessons! I'm so excited!! You're an awesome dancer, actor, chef...well I've never tasted your cooking but I'm sure it is stellar! Well, I just wanted to write to you because to let you know you've inspired me. Not only were you beautiful in Ballroom, but from everything I've read about and from you, you are a beautiful person just by being the kind person you are. Take care and God bless you and your family.

Love,
Marietta

Good luck for the future.

The first movie I ever seen with Paul Mercurio was Strictly Ballroom. It is one of my favorite movies of all time and it is hilarious. The next movie was Joseph, without a doubt another one of my favorites. I rent them so much I need to just buy them. I am watching Joseph now and decided to search the web. Thanks for making 2 of my favorite movies and you dancing is outstanding.

I read recently that Baz Luhrman is making another film in Australia. The article said it was "an Australian Gone with the Wind" I wondered if there might be a good role for you in that?? Your fans here in the US would love to see you in another movie.
Anyway..I see that you are busy with another creative enterprise. I like the colors in the #3 label for your beer.

Here I am again. It was the first time I managed to write anything yesterday. Now I'l be writing loads :D I just wanted you to read this poem: I remember it being read at my uncles funeral. It's beautiful, and I share your love for poetry

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

That was written by W H Auden, God he's such an amazing poet.

I also wanted to share my voice with you. Like your dancing I have a passion
to perform as a vocalist on the westend stage.
Would you mind if I sent you a video of me performing? Id love to have your opinion on it. I'd just want you to say what you think, nothing more :). By the end of this email you maybe asleep anyway ;D.

Write back when you have a spare moment. All the best
Alice xxxx

Alice (email) on 19 January, 2006

I don't know what to say. The fact is I'm speechless. You have an outstanding talent. I crave musical theatre. Can you say in one word what you feel like when you dance? Because when I'm up on the stage I forget everything and become a body of light, kind of like being isolated in my own world. It's such an amazing feeling. A lot of my inspiration came from you. Your dancing moved me. So I just wanted to say thanx :). I hope to suceed in the westend eventually!! Te he. Can't believe you may read this, how bizzare. Thanx again, hope to hear from you.
p.s. if you ever stop dancing, they'l b sum butt kicking in order xxxx

vanessa (email) on 15 January, 2006

I wrote a poem thought i'd share it with you, hope u get a chance to read it:

Forgotten Mask

As I gazed upon him in his depth of his un-surness, he thought me asleep.

As I watched him open the shutters to look upon the full moon.

His arms outstretched, his hands gently rests upon the window fame. Awe-struck and amazed at

it's magnificence, it's glory as it hung upon an invisible string.

Realizing for once in his life, he was exposed naked for all to see,
the man he could be, the man he should be, the man he could become.

It brought to the surface his humanity, all his fears, his sorrows, his emptiness and his pain, the weakness that was forced upon him in which he wore this mask.

The essence of the moonlight strengthened him gave him courage to be his true self and suddenly, I looked at him with new eyes

For once in his life he was not hiding behind the safety of the mask. he was transformed from the prison in which he was held, awaking to the fact that if he adorned the mask again, it would destroy him.

As tears slide down his face, washing away a lifetime of no yesterdays, I then saw it beside him,

"forgotten",

laid a well worn mask.
by Vanessa Napier
it is a pulished piece, I love poetry

Hey Paul, When are you going to make another movie? It would be great to see you on the big screen again!

Tina (email) on 11 January, 2006

Hi, Paul
I just found out the film Strictly Ballroom last week and watched it. Now its one of my favorite movie. Please keep up dancing and being an actor. You are very talented! I was happy to find out that you are a good husband and it seems you enjoy your family life with your lovely wife and 3 daugthers. I am also encouraged to hear that you love your life, even though you lost your brother to suicide...I have the similar experiences, it was very depressing to loose someone especially a relative that way. However, sharing will help all of us heal.

Brenda Poklacki (email) on 2 January, 2006

With the popularity of Celebrity Dance programs on American television, why hasn't anyone tapped on Paul's shoulder and asked him to participate? This is major oversite by the program developers. On American cable television "Stricktly Ballroom" plays every day, sometimes several times a day. Are studio heads so stupid that they don't recognize an audience when they see it?

Paul (email) on 28 December, 2005

I apologise for being away from the guest book for so long and not answering any questions that have been asked. I have been busy but I also have forgotten to check in here. Thanks to every one that has taken some time out of their day to make a comment here, I appreciate your postive thoughts and your support, oftenm times it is because of that support that I keep going!

Better late than never: sexy bubble???? thanks I guess :)
Rose I am sorry I didnt read this in time to be helpful - my grandfather came from Palermo Scicily. I do not know if he was always from that region or if his family came from elsewhere - I will ask my father as I have never thought about it.
Michael, Darren is now a practising accupuncturist and I believe he is in Sydney - I havent seen him for some years. The best way to find him would be to contact Sydney Dance Company as I believe he may still have contact with them and perhaps treat some of the dancers.
Marj, thank you for reminding me what I occassionely forget.
Michelle I am more than happy for you to print up the two poems you have refered to and give them to people. They were very helpful to my healing and also to my mothers. I am also aware of other people who have printed them from the site and used them in the road to their own recovery after suicide had taken place with in their family. I am glad you have moved on and I thank you for your kind words.
Just-Dawn, no the beer will not make it to America any time soon but never say never!

I hope every one had a wonderful Xmas and I wish all a happy, safe, joyous and loving New Year!

I just love the music, dance and you and the woman who played your mother. I have hundreds of DVDS and I always put your movie on to cheer me up! Enjoy reading your web site, just found it and I read all your thoughts! Best wishes, Ken Uller

Hi Paul, this is a long-shot, but do you have any contact information on Darren Spowart or know what he is up to these days. I am asking on behalf of my friend Ralph Glenmore (former Ailey dancer). I am planning something for his 50th birthdy and if I can contact Darren he would be really pleasantly surpised

Marj (email) on 7 November, 2005

Dear Paul,
I read your experience wherein people feel free to comment on weight gain. I completely identify and I want to quote something you wrote that inspired me: "Only by unconditionally embracing who you are - past and present, will you free yourself to move forward to learn, to know, to discover and to grow into the being you truly are."
I enjoy your work, all of it, not just Strictly Ballroom which is my favorite movie. I just hope you will continue to work and that work will be available in the U.S. Your generosity in sharing your inmost thoughts is incredible and shows you to be the outstanding person you are.

Michelle (email) on 5 November, 2005

Dear Paul:
Thank you very much for sharing so many of your thoughts and feelings on so many subjects. I continue to ponder many of your statements, which I confess will take me awhile to read through all of them. Have you considered writing a book of your poetry and prose? I wanted to ask also... and my apologies for doing so in such a public venue... but I have a friend who struggles still after many years over the suicide of her then 17-year old son... I read the two pieces you wrote about the subject, and I was very moved... I want to ask your permission to share those two pieces with my friend... I think they may help her... Somehow you managed to describe my own feelings as I went through that... as luck would have it I was unsuccessful in my attempt... but what you describe was exactly how I felt... Also, have you considered being the director of your own film? Even as I mention that, though, I can see where that might be a difficult time crunch trying to have a family life while directing and acting in a film... especially if you go all out and write the screenplay too... Does Australia sponser any kinds of Independent Film ventures that you could possibly become involved in? It's too bad England is so far away from Australia... it would be great if you could become involved in a film project with Kenneth Branagh... I can just see you doing very well in one of his projects... Having visited LA (I was there during 9/11), I think you and your wife made the right choice to not move there with your family... Hollywood is too crazy-nuts... totally out of touch with reality...Hang in there sir... I pray for your success, for you deserve it...

I second Charles' email of 12 Oct. I was suffering from chronic nosebleeds when Strictly Ballroom came into my home. Whenever I got a bleed I had to ice my forehead, pack my nose, and remain quiet for one-two hours. I watched this movie because it made me feel better and I thank you for helping me over a rough period.
I wish more of your movies were available to the American fans. Good luck.

Anne (email) on 15 October, 2005

Hey there!Wow I just watched Strictly Ballroom for media studies we are doing a directors study on Baz Lurhman and I think your a good and talented dancer..I so did not know that he was a judge on NZ Dancing with the stars!

Charles Pinzon (email) on 12 October, 2005

Just saw "Ballroom" on HD. Though I'm an aging mass media professor and occasional dance fan, I knew nothing of Mr. Mercurio's work. Took me awhile to realize there was no stunt double.
I was disheartened to find that so charismatic and talented a performer could not make the transition to Hollywood leading man given the blandness of today's Afflecks et al.
George Chakiris had the same problem many years earlier. I suspect Hollywood is still uncomfortable with the notion of danseur as actor. After all, aren't all dancers...?
How ironic given Mr. M's long marriage and three children. Perhaps there is a hidden resentment toward a straight man succeeding in a "gay profession" consistent with the challenges Arthur Ashe and Tiger Woods faced very early in their careers as black men succeeding in "white" sports?
The upside is his maturity, the ability to enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts and to get off the bus at the right stop.
Best wishes from Ellensburg, WA.

I love Baz Luhrmann's film "Ballroom Dancing" (that's what it's called here) and the talented Paul Mercurio's contribution for which I'd like to congratulate him. I'm 20 and I'm going to go in to theatre and I'm hugely inspired by dance and video to use on stage. I think this piece of work is wonderful. Thanks so much.

hi paul,

here i am again.

I just read your story about the cup being half full or half empty at paul's corner.
i think - once again - it is great that you share such thoughts with us :-).

i personally think that it is quite hard to decide whether the cup is half full or half empty, i think it varies with the situations one experiences, the ups and downs in life.

i hope that i'll always be able to somehow fill my cup again when it seems a little too empty - and i truly wish that to you and your family and to anyone out there.

i think it's important to stay positive in one's life, don't you?

always take care, and stay as good-hearted as you are!

I also really liked Strictly Ballroom, and "Tina Sparkle" often comes to mind when thinking about Aussie films.
So, keep up the good work!

A perfect poet 41505

Send not to know for whom these bells toll?
My soul is paying full toll… a fee to set me free…
I love and I am loved… I am a perfect poet…
I am a perfect poet, for I love and I am loved.

I am a perfect poet, because I have learned,
Beyond the words and worlds of many others,
A perfect poet has just two tasks to meet perfection,
With ease, one of these twins is won, simply achieved,
Compared to the immeasurable challenging nature, stricture,
Stature, scripture, structure, complicity, complexity of the other…
First, with simple words works scrambled, blindly maligned
Aligned occasionally rhymed to her/his satisfaction,
Rich or poor, in sickness or in health, for better or worse,
Ignoring all curse, taking whatever is in store, finding the score,
A perfect poet translates from the prosaic mosaic,
Refutes, computes, disputes, dilutes, imputes, minutes
All the life of process, to a sharp, poetic pitch,
A high degree of poignancy, being significant,
Her/his bas-relief regales, towering over all other scales,
On bails of joy and grief…

Bound in a second round, without a second,
Minute, hour, day, week, month, year,
Decade, century, millennium to spare,
The rare second chore to score is,
To become integral, to be a poetic soul…
The feat depends not on fame, recognition,
threats of perdition, any sedition, petition,
Cognition, nor being seen as a celebrity…
The stasis may be a purely singular, peculiar
Secret to a perfect poet, alone…

Send not to know for whom these bells toll?
My soul is paying full toll… a fee to set me free …

Me and my daughter Michela saw Strictly Ballroom for the first time last week, late in the evening. Michela is only 5, but wanted to watch the movie until the end, no matter how tired she was. You have and amazing dancing talent. Now I will surely buy the DVD.
p.s. Your surname sounds very much Italian (we are Italian, too) so we are double pleased!

Thank you.

Wanting to be challenged and face fear, I started to learn ballroom dancing. I watched Strictly Ballroom tonight. Thank you for your inspiring courage and demonstrating the beauty of discipline.

It is amazing how one can experience their body in a new way through dance.

Thank you for using your power to create and inspire. Long live dance.

I loved Strickly Ballroom and wanted to find out more about it's simply adorable star. Paul is what I thought, a great guy! Ha, ha, ha! I am so glad that he is married with children, and has taken that inward journey. I look forward to seeing more of his work. I just ordered 9-1/2 weeks, and will follow that up with another of his works. I hope he continues to work, either in front of the camera or behind the scenes, as a choreographer.

I had seen Strictly Ballroom on video years ago and just rented it again on DVD and loved it so much that I'm buying the DVD. I love the dancing, the story and the satire. I studied ballet myself for many years as a child/young adult and have done bits of other types of dancing, including ballroom. Paul's dancing is just so incredible in Strictly Ballroom--I think he's better than the stars he was compared to at the time like John Travolta & Patrick Swayze. I can usually recognize when a dancer has ballet training (because they dance better than those without it) and when I watched the DVD, I went online to see what Paul's background was, because it looked like he had ballet training (sure enough, he did). I also like his acting in the film--he could teach Colin Firth (star of the BBC's Pride & Prejudice) a thing or two about "smoldering" looks. I wish we saw more of Paul in the U.S., in films and dancing.

Hi Paul,

This is the first time I’ve ever posted anything like this. Many people on this blog have expressed (better than I’m able to) my respect for you and your talent. It would be redundant for me to repeat it. I think you’re a renaissance man. Both right and left brained. Bravo!

This is what made me want to write you. I read your feelings on spirituality. How refreshing to find someone whose beliefs are similar to mine. I also believe God is a woman, don’t believe in organized religion, and believe my own inner faith is my spirituality. Thanks!

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

PS: Freedom of choice must never be taken away by the right-to-lifers. Thanks for your comments.

I've been on vacation for the past 2 weeks. After returning from the beach on Thursday I watched Strictly Ballroom again. Before I knew it I had watched it at least 10 times by Sunday (well almost, fast forwarded to the parts I like).

I found this site when I decided to see what you (Paul) have been up to since SB and Exit Eden. After reading Paul's Corner I like you even more. I wish you would get more work in the U.S. It's obvious that you have lots of fans here.

I wish you and your family all the best.

Thank you for making such a brilliant flm, which shows a character (Fran) who everyone else rejects it gives hope to everyone no matter who they are.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart

Hi Paul:

I just saw "Strictly Ballroom" for the first time on the Sundance Channel. What an incredible movie...you WERE the movie! So, I wandered on-line to find out more about you and I must say I'm impressed with all that you have done with your life. You are a very accompished man. You should be proud of yourself and your work and of your persistence. I wish we could see more of you here in the U.S., but I certainly understand the desire to stay in one's home country (although it seems the world is missing out on a LOT of work you have done/are doing down under). Congratulations on all your success, and wishes for continued success!

Sincerely,

I admire your stamina and faith. In the face of continuing fan adoration (which can be both a career enhancement or hinderance) you are still working towards your dreams and steadfastly standing by your family in the midst of the constant struggle to stay employed and be creative in the process. Such duality can be a bit of a tug of war, yet you appear to handle it so gracefully. Thank you for that example and inspiration.

Me (email) on 15 July, 2005

Paul, what is your waist measurement and what is your hip measurement? I love the the way the proportion of your hips to your waist seems so huge, especially in Exit to Eden.

Heylo
Fantastic site! I watched strictly ballroom last night - I've never heard of Paul - or that film before! But I really enjoyed it... so thought I'd research! I think in a strange way I totally fell in love with Paul in that film and I'm devestated that he has grown older (I'm only 18... bless me)
But a truely great film, with a great cast - at times I didn't get the Austrailian humour! (I'm English) but it was still Great! And I hope my research will bring me across more of Pauls work!
Mary

hey i just watched strictly ballroom this morning and it is the best movie and paul u look so hot in that movie!!!!

Boxey (email) on 29 June, 2005

I understand that you've been a judge in the Australian version of "Dancing with the Stars. It's a big hit here in the U.S. I really liked it at first, but after looking at it a few times decided I didn't like it and turned to another channel. To me it seems more like a popularity contest than anything else. The celebs with the biggest fan bases stay on and the ones with the smallest fan bases leave. I this program is picked up for a second season, I would be thrilled if you could be a guest judge. That's the only way I would ever consider looking at it again.

Carla (email) on 27 June, 2005

Hello Paul, My name is Carla and I am 8 years old and love dancing. I have just watched 'Strictly Ballroom' for the very first time and absolutely love your dancing. You are the best dancer I have ever seen. You have made me want to start doing ballroom dancing lessons. I look forward to seeing you in another film soon. Kind regards,Carla

Hi Paul:
Just wanted to let you know that you have inspired me to continue flamenco dancing again. I want to dance like the gypsies!

Michelle (Aus) (email) on 23 June, 2005

Hello Paul :) i know nearly every single one of your guestbook comments start with this...but i just watched Strictly Ballroom and it has inspired me to be more confident in terms of dance. im QUITE a terrible dancer, but after i had watched the movie, i started to think of dancing as something that i could do if i really made an effort and built up my confidence, and that it can be such a good expressive release. You are such a gifted person and it was great to see you shine on screen. Thank you

Marie (email) on 22 June, 2005

I've seen some of your other movies and have always felt that you did the best you could with what you had despite the rest of the films. I really wish you would work more in the States as yours is a talent that we would love to see more of. Keep dancing and acting.

I'm always looking at them and using the ones I can. For those of us in the US what varieties of beer can we use in your recipes? Also, we'd love to know if there is anyplace in the US where we can get your beer. We are in the Seattle, WA area. Can you let us know plesae?

hola Carmen,

Melanie (email) on 16 May, 2005

Paul, you are incredibly talented. Not only in dance, but your acting too...you are definately the total package. The very first time I saw Strictly Ballroom I fell in love with the movie, the dancing, the characters. The past few weeks it's been on one of our cable (I'm in New York City) On Demand movie lists. I've watched it every day and sometimes twice a day. I can't seem to get enough of it...so I just bought the DVD. I'm glad I found this site, I've read a lot of the articles, your beautiful poems. If I ever figure out how to covert your measurments, I'm going to try some of your recipes. I was sad to see things didn't go so well for you for a period.....Hollywood, wake up...this guy is wonderful. I hope you read this Paul...because I wish you, Andrea and your lovely daughters all the best and I wish you much success in the future. I look forward to seeing you in more movies.

Carmen (email) on 16 May, 2005

Dear Paul:

I write to you again, but now in English. I come from a city called Cadiz, in the South of Spain,

which is one of the places where the flamenco was born. I'm very fond of flamenco dancing, and

for a long time I belonged to a flamenco group, although it was an amateur one. I had to give it

up because I had to move to another city for professional reasons, but I remember those lessons

and rehersals as the best memories of those days. I still keep a lot of dresses of those that I

wore on the stage, and also videos and photos. We danced mainly in beneficent events, because we

were an amateur group. Our teacher was a professional dancer. That is why I admire and envy those

people who have real talent for dancing. If a fairy offered me a wish, I would like to be a

dancer.

I only had seen one of your films (Joseph), and I didn't know that you were a dancer. Your work

is not widely known in Spain, but I'll try to watch as much as possible of your work.

Best wishes

Carmen (email) on 15 May, 2005

Beth G (email) on 11 May, 2005

Paul,
I just wanted to write and thank you very sincerely for your gift of dance. I am a mom of three kids. My 2 girls and I sat down and watched "Strictly Ballroom" together and they have decided that dancing would be much more rewarding than hanging out with kids in school who are making some bad choices. They don't seem to have many goals nor any desire to achieve something greater in life. I know you said that you don't dance any longer but what you did for my girls can't be expressed with enough thanks. Your gift helped my girls make some great choices. It may not ever be their careers but it is helping them stay on the right side of treating their bodies with respect. They aren't touching drugs or alcohol... but they are looking at the class catalogs for dancing. Thank you Paul~

Very Sincerely;
Beth

I have said that if chocolate were to take human form it would be Johnny Depp. ;) Paul though is definitely poetry. I was going to write he is poetry in motion but it led to that instead.

Toni (email) on 2 May, 2005

Thank you Tea for answering my question. I've been reading as much as I can from this sight, and what Paul writes of himself. What a special person he is to take the time to write his inner thoughts. That's takes a lot of courage, I don't think I could bare my sole as he does. But that is what makes him special. He has the same thoughts, feeling, ups and downs as we all do. God will bless him have no fear.

I hope you don't have issues with a guy being a fan. I have always admired your talent and skill. I have thoroughly enjoyed your movies.

I would love it if you were a neighbor and would train me in dance here in Los Angeles, but I understand that Australia is home.

I have enjoyed reading your posts in Paul's Corner. They really show how you are a real human. I especially can relate to the desire to sit around the house naked and feast on chicken wings and watch tele. I do that on occasion, but my roommate is a prude and gets upset. (He even sleeps with clothes on -- and there aren't any kids around).

Thank you for having a web site and thank you for being assessible to the those who admire your hard work.

Cheers,
Eric

Toni, (email) on 29 April, 2005

Forgot to ask your height?

Toni, (email) on 28 April, 2005

Paul,

I've just seen SB, can't watch it enough. The innocence of the 50's in the film was so profound. Sorry we lost it. Your portrail of Scott made every mother want you for their son. Whoever wrote the script gave you the exact correct words to say to keep Fran's feelings from being hurt. The eye contact you had with your partner was magnetizing. The audience was drawn to you and not your female partner, which in dance is usually the reverse. I was disappointed not to see a complete dance with Fran. We were constantly pulled away to another portion of the movie. Didn't get to see enought of your Latin dance ability, we saw mostly from the waist up, similiarly as to how Elvis was flimed. The close ups of your face, and the length of them drew us into your thoughts. Great feeling. Great movie to make the entire female populatin fall in love with you, as you have no doubtedly have found out. That's what we've all been waiting for a macho male with sensitivetly.

Did see 9 1/2 Weeks. Thaught I was watching a porno film, watched it again, saw past the nudity and liked your performance. Disappointed you had to do nudity. How does your wife handle this? Will be watching Exit to Eden this week. To bad it's taken so long for many of us to become accquainted with you and your work. P.S. We're missing recent photos of you, where are they?
Toni,

Tea (email) on 26 April, 2005

Actually after rereading my post I want to make a correction: You are a magical beautiful wonderful creature of this earth. My thoughts have nothing to do with that.
P.S. if anyone wants to visit my home in cyber space here it is:http://tracisblob.blogspot.com/

Tea (email) on 26 April, 2005

Paul, I think you are a magical beautiful wonderful creature of this earth. You are amazing. I can't emphasize this enough. You are truly gorgeous inside and out.
Second, I am so mad at Baz! I fucking could hate him (I don't believe though in the H word). How the hell could he treat you like this? Not return your phone calls? What the fuck is wrong with him? What a miserable person! I can't believe he would not give you money so he could release your footage in the DVD set. What a greedy selfish man he is. Strictly would not have the magic in it if you were not in it. You as well as Tara made that movie what it is. I really can't bare to even think that he can be so ungrateful to you and so utterly cruel! If he was a decent person he would do more for you. I may have to try to find his address and email him a note on what I think of him and how he has treated you.
In your website you say your emotional I am also very emotional so excuse the language. I'll see you on Paul's corner. I like the other ladies of Paul's corner just can't get enough of you.

Lots of love,
Traci

Letters take a while to get to Paul, as they must be forwarded from me (and I'm slow!). Still, Paul is much better about writing to folks on his site than via postal mail.

Paul really loves his fans, and gives a great deal to them at Paul's Corner.

Wonderful site! But tell me, have you ever got a response to the fan address?

Maria

Juelda (email) on 11 April, 2005

I don't dance because I'm a klutz. So bad in fact my mother made me take two years of ballet and tumbling when I was 6 to teach me how to fall gracfully, which it did. Both of my roomates are Middle Eastern fusion dancers so I am surrounded by music, movement and a deep appreciation of dance. While the movie, Strictly Ballroom may have been my original introduction, it was the genuine heartfelt passion in both watching you dance and reading your poetry that has made me a life long admirer. I have to be honest, watching you dance literally took my breath away. Thank you so much for sharing so much of yourself with people you don't even know.

Hi Paul im 16 years old and i've lived in Australia my entire life and saw Strictly Ballroom for the first time whilst visiting my sister at Otago Uni in New Zealand. ironic eh?

i absolutly loved it and went out and bought the dvd the next day and have watched it just about every day since. u've inspired me and i am now waiting for my first ballroom dance lesson in a couple of weeks. i can't wait! Hi Paul - you probably remember my brother Mark from JCSHS? I have just watched the Talking Head i/view. Great to see that things are going ahead for you. Am also really enjoying watching you on Dancing With The Stars. I just wanted to let you know that you are the reason that I auditioned for T/Arts at Curtin after seeing you in the 1978 production. Now I am happily married (nearly 17 years) to a boy from my year at school and have two fantastic kids. Just wanted to say thanks!

Didn't actually know about Michael until recently. He was a dear friend at school and someone I was extremely fond of. So enjoyed working with him in Gammer Gurton. My deepest sympathies. Love to Joe and Connie. Ellie

Hello Paul and everyone. I saw you in Joseph and was intrigued. Very powerful and moving performance. Saw you then in Exit to Eden. Wow again. :) Very big fan of yours and hope to see more of you in film sometime. I've wanted to be a dancer all my life but never got to it. Finding out one of my favorite actors is also a dancer only inspires me. Thank you for the wonderful work you do. Take care, God bless.

Sara W (email) on 30 March, 2005

When are they going to show Joseph again on tv? It's like they hate God and His Word. Just like at the Acadamy Awards they did not reconize the Passion of the Christ.

Paul, what do you think about with this Terri Schivo case. To me, it's unfair to remove her feeding tube when it's not Terri's time yet. It should be god's will, not man's will. Please respond soon.

Hi Paul...

You must know that I knew you later that I attended the film Joseph...
So, my question is...if you would like to make another Biblical personage, which would be, and where you searched inspiration to make a man of faith in God as Joseph

Thanks and Kisses
Carol (another Carol from Brazil)

Lynn (email) on 29 March, 2005

After seeing you in "joseph" I was captured. I tried to find out if you had made other films and found "strictly ballroom". Your talent as a dancer was clothed in the most perfect body (backside)! And your eyes seem to hold a host of unshared secrets. Thank you for sharing yourself in film!

Wendy (email) on 29 March, 2005

Hi, Paul. The choreography in Strictly Ballroom is awesome! The backstage rumba between Scott and Fran is the most romantic dance ever. I'm looking forward to seeing other movies with your choreography and your dancing. Sign me "a big fan"

Hi Paul, just saw your interview on ABC Talking Heads and enjoyed it immensely - didn't know much about you as a person before, but have followed your career and, of course, adored Strictly Ballroom - I've seen it about 3 times.
That beer look pretty good, I will look out for it.
Best wishes with that venture and also Happy Easter to you and your beautiful family.

paul - i've seen Exitto Eden several times, and enjoy watching you - your accent is awesome, and your body amazing - especially your rear end. How perfect it is - so round. kind of big for a guy your size - but i think that makes it more appealing, tor both guys and girls. it fills out your jeans really really well. is it natural, or did you have to work at it to get it so perfect?

In spain we translate the film "strictly ballroom" as "El amor está en el aire"(that means "love is in the air" as the main song of the film).

March 25, 2005 will be an important date for us here in Japan as Strictly Ballroom comes out on DVD! I've already ordered my copy. I nearly started jumping up and down in the store when I read it in a catalogue! (By the way, it's called "Dancing Hero" in Japan)
